An Illinois man was sentenced on July 10 to spend the rest of his life in prison for following a security guard from a Peoria nightclub to a gas station, where prosecutors say he and another man opened fire.
Lamentae R. Turner, 25, was convicted of murdering Stashaun Wheeler, 35, outside a Casey’s gas station in January 2023.
Surveillance footage and cellphone data showed that Turner was at the nightclub with Wheeler and followed him to the gas station, according to a Peoria County news release. Video from the station captured Turner and another man approaching Wheeler and firing at least 10 shots before fleeing on foot.
Upon receiving a call regarding the shooting, authorities arrived at the station and found Wheeler in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Turner was convicted in May 2025 of first-degree murder and the unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. His hearing, during which he was served a life sentence, occurred this month after the defense requested multiple continuances.

At Turner’s sentencing, Wheeler’s mother, Kelly Bond, told the court that losing a child was the “most painful experience” and said “her life would never be the same,” according to the release.
“If I have to spend the rest of my life visiting my son in the cemetery, then the defendant should spend the rest of his life in prison,” Bond said.
Wheeler’s obituary remembers him as someone who “enjoyed his coffee every morning, playing slots, lifting weights and stepping out in his ‘Balenciaga’s’ and enjoying life.”
