Lindsay Clancy’s rare reaction to evidence about kids’ birthdays as her 2-word phrase for day she killed them revealed

LINDSAY Clancy’s two-word phrase she uses to describe the day she strangled her three children has been revealed in court on day 16 of her trial, where she also gave a physical reaction to evidence.

Lindsay, 36, seeks an insanity defense in her murder trial where she pleaded not guilty to three murder charges after she strangled her three kids with exercise bands on January 24, 2023.

Court resumed for day 16 of the former labor and delivery nurse’s trial on Wednesday, where attorney Kevin Reddington continues to argue Lindsay was not criminally responsible because she suffering from undiagnosed postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings.

Five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan were found in the basement of their Duxbury, Massachusetts home by their father Patrick Clancy after he discovered Lindsay in the backyard after her suicide attempt.

Reddington got a court order to allow Psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel to visit Lindsay at Brigham Women’s Hospital a few days after the killings while she was receiving treatment after she attempted to end her life, which left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Zeizel said on Wednesday in the second day of his testimony that he has visited Lindsay on around 60 occasions since then.

During cross-examination, the prosecution asked Zeizel to clarify what words Lindsay uses to describe the day of her kids’ deaths.

Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham asked if Lindsay referred to everything as “my tragedy,” which he said was “just one of the things that she’ll say.”

Zeizel also revealed to the court that Lindsay thinks about her three kids frequently at the hospital, where she is under constant one-to-one monitoring due to suicide attempt concerns.

“She really loves them and misses them and thinks of them every single day, almost every moment of the day,” he said.

Details about what Lindsay has been like in the years since the killings where she has been held at Tewksbury Hospital, a roughly hour and a half drive from the Plymouth courthouse, were also revealed.

Zeizel described Lindsay as “extremely well-regarded and well-liked” at the hospital.

The prosecution appeared to suggest Lindsay acted normally on the three anniversaries of January 24 that have passed and on her kids birthdays, which got a visual reaction from Lindsay.

The prosecution read inpatient notes from Tewksbury Hospital, revealing Lindsay ate dinner with her mom and played games with her in the evening on May 26, 2023, which would have been Callan’s first birthday.

Today, Cora would be turning nine on Christmas Eve, Dawson would be seven on September 30, and Callan would have turned four.

On December 24, 2023, Lindsay “spent time in the TV room or sitting outside her room, utilizing phone and visited with family [sic],” Buckingham read from the records.

On the one year anniversary of her kids’ deaths, medical staff wrote she engaged with both staff and select peers and “was pleasant during interactions,” spending much of the morning and afternoon in her room on her electronics.

Buckingham also detailed patient notes from September 30, 2024, which would have been Dawson’s birthday, where Lindsay attended a coffee group and was social with select peers on that day.

After Buckingham read out the notes, Lindsay could be seen shaking her head, appearing to be staring at the prosecutor.

Lindsay could be seen closing her eyes and continuing to shake her head as she took a deep breath moments before Buckingham began to read out a note from what would have been Cora’s sixth birthday in 2024.

Lindsay could then be seen grabbing a blue pen off the defense table and writing down a note for Reddington on a notepad, before clicking the pen and throwing it down on the table.

Lindsay also appeared to say a few words to Reddington.

The defendant has remained stoic throughout some parts of the trial, but has become visibly emotional during graphic moments, including the playing of the 911 call her then-husband made after he found her and during the showing of the autopsy photos of her children.

While a medical examiner was on the stand, Lindsay yelled out “I can’t do it!” as she became inconsolable, forcing the judge to call an immediate recess.

On the second year anniversary of the killings, Lindsay’s inpatient treatment goal was “to work on my mental health and to feel better,” according to hospital records.

On January 24, 2026, just months before she would stand trial, Lindsay was visited by her parents after she spent time during the day taking part in a coffee group at the hospital and using her phone.

Lindsay’s parents have been living out of hotels in the years since, visiting their daughter at the hospital almost daily.

The notes also detailed how Lindsay took her medication as directed and was encouraged to take part in group activities.

“I didn’t hear that she is laughing and partying and having a good time while in the Tewksbury Hospital, did you see anything like that?” Reddington asked Zeizel, appearing to counter the prosecution’s suggestion about Lindsay’s behavior.

“No, Lindsay Clancy has bad days and worse days,” the psychologist replied.

Lindsay remains held at Tewksbury Hospital, where two nurses join her daily for her trial, helping wheel her in and out of the courtroom after she was left confined to a wheelchair following her suicide attempt.

On January 24, 2023, Lindsay strangled Cora, Dawson and Callan while her then-husband Patrick was briefly out of the house, picking up medicine for Cora and takeout for him and Lindsay.

When he returned, he found an unusually quiet house and Lindsay on the ground in the backyard after she crushed up pills, cut her wrists and neck with a knife from the kitchen and jumped from their bedroom window on the second floor.

Patrick then found their three young kids in the basement of their home, removing the exercise bands from their necks while first responders tended to Lindsay.

If convicted, Lindsay faces life in prison without parole, but if she is found not guilty, she will be committed to a state mental health facility.
