Toddler Pulled Alive from the Rubble 6 Days After Venezuela Earthquakes as Thousands Remain Missing

A toddler was rescued alive from the rubble six days after the back-to-back earthquakes in Venezuela.
On Tuesday, June 30, a young boy named Klieber Morán was pulled from the collapsed Los Corales Garden building in La Guaira state — the area worst impacted by the June 24 earthquakes, Reuters, The Guardian and the BBC reported, citing Venezuelan officials.
“Early this morning, a 2-year-old boy was rescued and is currently receiving care at a health centre in Caracas,” Venezuela’s National Assembly president Jorge Rodríguez said in a televised address, per The Guardian. The outlet notes there are conflicting reports on the boy’s age, but he is believed to be 2 or 3 years old.
The child was rescued by a rescue team from Jordan, per the BBC.

In footage of the rescue, Klieber is first seen lying still on his stomach in the rubble. Moments later, rescue workers pulled the toddler from the rubble and wrapped him in a blanket as onlookers cheered.
The boy received first aid treatment and was transported to a hospital in the capital, Caracas, Jorge said, per the BBC. He is in good condition following the rescue.
The toddler was the only reported survivor on Tuesday, which marked the sixth day of rescue efforts.
“We must hold on to the hope of continuing to find people alive beneath the rubble,” Jorge said, per The Guardian.
As of Tuesday, a total of 1,943 deaths have been recorded following the two major earthquakes in Venezuela, Jorge announced at a press conference.

Jorge said in a translated post on X, “As of this Tuesday, 1,943 deaths are recorded, the number of injured stands at 10,571, and 15,866 people are registered as affected.” The president added that 14 shelters have been set up in La Guaira and 55 between Caracas and the other affected states.
Back-to-back earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.1 and 7.5, hit Venezuela overnight on June 24. The second quake is reportedly the South American country’s biggest in over a century.
Search efforts have continued to find survivors days after the earthquakes.

“We deeply value the support provided through the search and rescue teams, specialized personnel, and humanitarian assistance,” Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, wrote on X. “These gestures of brotherhood strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our countries in the most difficult moments.”
