Nearly three decades after Tupac Shakur’s death, the rapper remains one of hip-hop’s most influential and enduring figures — while the long-running mystery surrounding his killing has finally reached a courtroom verdict.

Shakur died on September 13, 1996, six days after he was critically wounded in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. He was only 25 years old and at the height of his career.

Shakur was shot while riding in a BMW driven by Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight after the two had attended a Mike Tyson boxing match.

According to prosecutors and investigators, a white Cadillac pulled alongside the BMW near the Las Vegas Strip and gunfire erupted. Shakur was transported to a hospital, where he died six days later.

For years, no one was charged in the case.

Duane Davis Became the Focus of the Investigation
Davis, now 63, was arrested in 2023 and became the first and only person charged in Shakur’s death.

Prosecutors argued that Davis helped organize the shooting following an altercation involving his nephew, Orlando Anderson, and members of Shakur’s entourage at the MGM Grand after the Tyson fight.

Investigators said Davis was in the white Cadillac that followed Shakur’s vehicle, although prosecutors did not accuse him of personally firing the weapon.

Much of the case relied on statements Davis had made over the years, including accounts in interviews, a documentary and a memoir.

Davis pleaded not guilty and maintained that his previous statements did not establish that he was responsible for the killing.
