Two Brits died after the handrail on their hotel balcony gave way in Lanzarote, an inquest heard.
Darren Silcox, 56, and Nicholas Thomas, 54, both from Cwmbran, Wales, fell from a balcony at a Canary Islands flat.
In October 2025, shop owner Darren and friend Nicholas tumbled from the balcony in the early hours of the morning while on holiday at the Galeon Playa Apartments.
The pair plunged into the atrium stairwell in the resort town of Costa Teguise at 1.30am following a night out.
Dad-of-two Darren passed away two hours after the fall while Nicholas was flown back to Britain for treatment. He was later moved to University Hospital in Llandough but sadly died nearly 10 months later on July 10.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall has been launched by Spain’s Civil Guard, Wales Online reports.
Investigators are said to be looking at whether poor upkeep or insufficient safety measures contributed to the fatal accident.
Emergency crews rushed to the holiday apartments at around 1.30am after the two men fell. Medical teams who arrived at the location confirmed that the 56 year old man had succumbed to his injuries sustained in the fall.
Opening an inquest into Mr Thomas’ death, Gwent coroner Rose Farmer told the hearing he fell between 15ft and 22ft after a wooden bannister collapsed.
He was taken to Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital on the island for initial treatment before he was flown back to the UK at the end of November.
A previous inquest into Mr Silcox’s death revealed that he died from a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures and skull lacerations.
The proceedings have been postponed until April 14 next year when a joint inquest is anticipated to take place.
