A 12-year-old boy who was reportedly caught in the middle of a violent confrontation in the Bronx has been identified as Jacob Freytes, the son of a retired NYPD sergeant.

According to police, Freytes was an innocent bystander when a stray bullet struck him in the chest during a fight outside a store on Elliott Place near the Grand Concourse shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday.

Heartbreaking surveillance footage reportedly shows the moments before and after the shooting. Jacob can be seen leaving his bicycle outside a nearby bodega before going inside to buy a ball. He later walked back outside and appeared to be preparing to leave when a confrontation suddenly erupted in the street.

The footage shows the 12-year-old looking toward the commotion as gunfire broke out. He then reportedly got off his bike and ran back into the bodega while holding his chest.

Inside the store, the boy appeared to collapse as people nearby looked on.

Jacob was transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln after being struck in the shoulder area, but he later died from his injuries.

Loved ones described him as a respectful and kind child who will be deeply missed. His uncle, Julio Lopez, said he had seen Jacob earlier that same morning and later heard gunshots while walking his dogs.

Authorities said as many as six men may have been involved in the confrontation, although it was not immediately clear how many people fired weapons.

Two other men were also injured during the incident. According to the NYPD, a 34-year-old man was shot in the left foot, while a 25-year-old was struck in the buttocks. Both were reported to be in stable condition.

Jacob’s death has left a family and community grieving, with loved ones struggling to understand how a young boy who was simply going about his day became an innocent victim of violence.

No arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine exactly what led to the shooting and identify those responsible.
