AN ICU doctor has revealed how medical staff came to the decision to take Lindsay Clancy’s youngest child off life support three days after she strangled him.

The second week of Lindsay’s trial began on Monday where she faces three murder charges for strangling her three children in the basement of her home on January 24, 2023.

David Casavant, a doctor who works in the intensive care unit of Boston Children’s Hospital, took the stand on Monday as one of the many witnesses called in Lindsay’s murder trial, sharing how officials came to the conclusion to take the youngest Clancy child off life support.

Lindsay has admitted to strangling her three children with exercise bands in the basement of their Massachusetts home while the children’s father was out of the house picking up medicine from CVS and takeout dinner.

After Lindsay’s ex-husband Patrick Clancy returned home from running errands, he found Lindsay on the ground in their backyard after she jumped from their second-story bedroom window.

Lindsay told Patrick that she tried to kill herself and that their children were in the basement.

Once first responders arrived to their home in Duxbury, Patrick ran to the basement, where he found his children – five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan – with exercise bands around their necks.

Patrick removed the bands from his children before first responders attempted live-saving care.

Cora and Dawson were pronounced dead at the hospital, but medical officials were able to regain a heartbeat for Callan.

Duxbury firefighter Jennifer Stratton said in her testimony on Thursday that she had to use her thumbs to perform chest compressions on Callan because of his size.

“I scooped him [Callan] up in my arms and carried him outside to the truck,” she testified.

Andrew Capraro, an emergency room doctor at Boston Children’s Hospital said on Monday that Callan was airlifted to his hospital for a higher level of care after being treated at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth.

He recalled Callan was breathing with the help of a ventilator and had significant brain swelling, noting to the jurors Callan’s brain was not getting enough oxygen.

Capraro said there was indications that the child suffered brain damage, and that while Callan was intubated, he was able to occasionally breathe on his own, “but it was rare.”

In his testimony, ICU doctor Casavant said he and neurologists performed several strict tests to see if Callan had any signs of brain activity.

Medical professionals tested how responsive Callan was to voices and physical touch, including pinching him and pressing on his nail bed.

Casavant said Callan did not respond at all to tests conducted.

“This told me that he was unresponsive to both things that would cause discomfort and things that would cause pain,” he testified, adding that Callan’s pupils also did not respond to a light being shined in them.

“The eyes are a direct extension of the brain … and the lack of a response to light indicates that there’s some abnormality to that, and in this case it was a brain injury.”

One round of brain death testing was performed to see if Callan had any brain activity and the same tests were conducted 24 hours later.

Casavant said there is a checklist that medical teams at Boston Children’s Hospital use when conducting brain- dead testing, where they go through the kind of responses they would expect from someone.

He said he was there as the neurological team conducted the tests, and on the second day of testing, doctors determined that Callan “met death by neurologic criteria.”

Once doctors found that Callan had no brain function, they decided, along with Patrick, to take Callan off of life support on January 27, 2023.

“Would it be fair to say that the brain stem itself that controls those automatic responses was still functioning somewhat but the part of the brain that made Callan, Callan was not functioning?” the prosecution asked.

“That’s exactly correct, yeah,” Casavant replied.

Casavant said patients’ families are often given a window of time to allow family to see the patient before life support was ended, which was done in Callan’s case.

When Casavant ended his testimony, Lindsay was seen grabbing a tissue from a tissue box and wiping her eyes with her hand.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington plans to seek an insanity defense in Lindsay’s case, arguing the former labor and delivery room nurse was experiencing undiagnosed postpartum psychosis.
