Ugandan Soccer Captain David Owori Dies Following Suspected Robbery Near His Home

KAMPALA, Uganda – Ugandan international footballer David Owori, captain of SC Villa and a member of the national team, has died after being attacked near his home in Kampala in what police believe was a robbery.

Owori, 27, was found seriously injured on the night of August 4 and was taken to the hospital, where he died the following day despite medical treatment. Police say the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify those responsible.

Police Investigating Suspected Robbery

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, Owori was approached by a group of unidentified individuals near his residence. Investigators believe the attackers attempted to steal his cellphone and other personal belongings before fleeing the scene.

Authorities have not announced any arrests and say detectives are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

A Leader on and Off the Field

Known by teammates and supporters as “Colgate,” Owori served as captain of SC Villa, one of Uganda’s most successful football clubs. He also represented Uganda’s national team and previously played professionally in Spain and Sweden.

SC Villa described Owori as a respected leader whose commitment extended beyond the football field, while the Federation of Uganda Football Associations praised his dedication to the sport and expressed condolences to his family.

News of Owori’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from teammates, supporters, public officials, and fellow athletes.

Uganda’s Parliament observed a moment of silence in his honor, and football organizations across the country called for a thorough investigation and justice for those responsible. Memorial services have also been held as friends, family, and fans remember his contributions to Ugandan football.

Police have not announced a motive beyond the suspected robbery, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
