A baby was found alive beneath the rubble after Colombia’s devastating earthquake

Amid the destruction left behind by a powerful earthquake in Colombia, rescuers discovered a tiny survivor beneath the ruins of a collapsed building in Cali.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, devastating communities across the region and leaving hundreds dead and thousands injured or missing.

But beneath the concrete and twisted debris, rescuers heard something that gave them hope.

A faint cry.

A voice came from beneath the rubble
Rescuers were searching through the remains of a collapsed five-story building when they heard a man’s voice beneath the debris.

They called out to him.

The man answered that he was there — and that he was holding a baby.

The discovery immediately changed the rescue operation.

Instead of simply searching for bodies, rescuers realized they had a living family trapped beneath the concrete.

The father protected his baby
According to reports, the father had managed to shield the infant with his own body as the building collapsed around them.

For hours, the baby remained trapped beneath the rubble with her father.

The rescuers carefully removed concrete and debris piece by piece, knowing that a careless movement could cause another collapse.

Then they finally reached the child.

The baby was alive.

A tiny survivor amid a massive tragedy
The infant suffered only minor injuries and was taken away for medical treatment.

Her mother was also rescued alive, according to reports.

The rescue became one of the most emotional moments following the earthquake because it offered a rare glimpse of hope during a disaster that had already claimed hundreds of lives.

Video of the rescue showed people working around the collapsed building as rescuers carefully brought the baby out of the debris.

The earthquake left a trail of devastation
The magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck on August 10, with the epicenter near San José del Palmar in Colombia’s Chocó region.

Major cities including Cali, Pereira, Quibdó and Manizales suffered extensive damage.

By August 13, Colombian authorities reported at least 273 deaths, 3,800 injuries and 377 people still missing. More than 12,500 homes had reportedly been destroyed.

Rescue teams continued searching several priority sites, sometimes calling for complete silence so they could listen for signs of life beneath the rubble.

One cry changed everything
In a disaster measured in collapsed buildings and heartbreaking casualty numbers, the sound beneath the rubble became something different.

It was proof that someone was still alive.

A father had survived while protecting his baby.

Rescuers heard them.

And they refused to stop digging.

Eventually, a tiny child emerged from the ruins — alive and breathing — giving a devastated country one extraordinary moment of hope.

Hundreds may have been lost in the earthquake.

But beneath tons of concrete, one faint cry reminded everyone why rescuers keep searching.

Because sometimes, after everything has collapsed, there is still a life waiting to be found.
