Colorado Husband Charged in Wife’s Death After Investigators Dispute Suicide Claim

A Colorado community is searching for answers after a mother of two was found dead inside her home, a case that investigators say took a dramatic turn after her husband’s initial explanation was questioned.

Patrick Theodore Barnett, 40, has been charged with the murder of his wife, Lindsey Barnett, 37, after authorities said evidence did not support the claim that she had died by suicide.

Lindsey, a school teacher and mother of two, was found dead inside the couple’s Lakewood home on the morning of August 13. Her husband had called emergency services and told authorities that she had harmed herself, according to an arrest affidavit.

Barnett reportedly told investigators that his wife had struggled with postpartum depression following the birth of their second child in February 2025. He claimed he had discovered her after going upstairs following an argument between the couple.

However, investigators later said the evidence at the scene raised questions about that account.

According to court documents, police found injuries on Lindsey’s body that they described as inconsistent with a self-inflicted death. Investigators also reported concerns about the location of blood evidence inside the home and said some details suggested the scene may have been altered.

Authorities continued examining the circumstances surrounding Lindsey’s final hours, including the couple’s relationship and events leading up to her death.

During the investigation, police learned that Barnett had allegedly been involved in an affair with another woman. According to investigators, the woman told police that Barnett had previously discussed ending his marriage and had described Lindsey as struggling with mental health issues.

Lindsey’s family disputed the idea that she would have taken her own life. Her mother, Donna Ott, told investigators that while Lindsey had experienced depression in the past, she had not recently shown signs that suggested she was planning to harm herself.

Family members described Lindsey as a loving mother who cared deeply about her children and was looking forward to the future.

As the investigation progressed, authorities arrested Barnett and charged him with murder. He is currently being held in Jefferson County Jail without bond.

The case has drawn attention because of the questions surrounding the initial suicide claim and the evidence investigators say led them to a different conclusion.

Barnett is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The investigation remains ongoing, and prosecutors will have the burden of proving their case during legal proceedings.

For Lindsey’s loved ones, the focus now remains on remembering a mother and teacher whose life ended far too soon — while waiting for the full truth to emerge through the justice system.
