Two Mexican Fishermen Found Alive Inside Cooler After Five Days Lost at Sea
CHIAPAS, Mexico — Two Mexican fishermen have survived an extraordinary ordeal after spending five days adrift in the Pacific Ocean, eventually being rescued while clinging to a large cooler after their fishing boat sank.
Daniel Guerrero Martínez, 53, and José Luis Portelas Villegas, 32, had set out from the fishing community of Paredón in Chiapas aboard their boat, the Camaronera. The pair lost contact with authorities just one day after leaving shore.
Fishing Trip Turns Into Fight for Survival
The fishermen’s boat sank Friday, leaving the two men stranded hundreds of miles from safety.
A search operation was launched after they failed to return and could no longer be contacted.
Authorities initially sent boats to retrace the route the fishermen were believed to have taken. As the search area expanded, aircraft and Mexican Navy units were brought in to assist.
The operation continued for days as rescuers searched a vast stretch of open ocean.
Found Inside a Giant Cooler
Five days after the search began, rescuers finally spotted the two men approximately 150 miles off the coast of Chiapas.
Incredibly, they had managed to stay afloat by taking refuge inside a large cooler.
The men had gone without food or drinking water throughout their ordeal and were suffering from severe dehydration when rescuers reached them.
They were brought aboard a Mexican Navy vessel before being transported by air to a hospital for medical treatment.

A Race Against Time
The rescue was considered remarkable because of the enormous challenges involved in locating two people drifting across the open Pacific.
The Mexican Navy used ships, interceptor boats and aircraft as part of the search operation, allowing rescuers to cover a much larger area of ocean.
Officials credited the coordinated search effort with locating the fishermen and bringing them back to safety.
After five days at sea, the men were finally reunited with their families.
What Sank Their Boat?
Authorities have launched an investigation into why the Camaronera sank.
Initial reports suggest that strong winds and severe weather may have contributed to the accident. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility of mechanical problems with the vessel’s engine.
The exact cause remains unclear.
For Martínez and Villegas, however, the immediate concern was simply staying alive.
Their survival depended on finding a way to remain above the water after losing their boat and enduring days without food or fresh water.

An Extraordinary Survival Story
The fishermen’s ordeal is a striking reminder of how quickly a routine fishing trip can become a life-or-death emergency at sea.
After five days surrounded by open water, the two men were found alive in circumstances that rescuers described as extraordinary.
They survived by holding onto a cooler until help finally arrived — turning an ordinary piece of fishing equipment into an unlikely lifeline.
Their recovery now marks a remarkable end to a desperate five-day search, while investigators work to determine exactly what caused their boat to disappear beneath the Pacific. (nypost.com)
