Arizona Teen Dies After Soccer Match Attack Days Before He Was Set to Start College

PHOENIX, Arizona — A 19-year-old Arizona man has died after being attacked during a neighborhood soccer game, just days before he was scheduled to begin his first semester of college.

Tumusifu Bazirake was playing soccer with his younger brother, Jeanpaul, at Sueno Park in Phoenix on August 6 when a confrontation reportedly broke out between players.

According to his family and police, Bazirake stepped in when the situation escalated, attempting to protect his younger brother.

Family Says He Tried to Protect His Brother

Jeanpaul recalled that tensions increased after his team scored a goal. According to his account, members of the opposing group became angry and a fight followed.

Jeanpaul said he was attacked first and that Bazirake intervened when he saw his younger brother in trouble.

The confrontation eventually left Bazirake seriously injured.

Emergency responders found him unresponsive at the park and transported him to a local hospital in extremely critical condition.

Teen Dies Days Later

Bazirake remained hospitalized following the August 6 incident.

Police were notified on August 13 that he had died from his injuries.

His death has now prompted authorities to investigate the incident as a homicide.

No arrests have been announced, and police have not publicly identified any suspects or persons of interest.
