Nolan Xavier Wells was only 18 years old — a talented student-athlete with dreams ahead of him and a future his family believed was just beginning.

But a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island, Mississippi, ended in tragedy when Nolan went missing and was later found dead. Months later, many questions surrounding his final moments remain unanswered.

According to authorities, Nolan had traveled to the island with friends during the holiday weekend. After the group returned, Nolan was not with them. His body was discovered two days later near the island. Officials initially considered drowning as a possibility, but the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.

For his parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, the loss has been devastating — and they continue to seek answers about what happened to their son.

They have questioned parts of the timeline and requested a deeper investigation, saying they want the full truth behind Nolan’s final hours. An independent autopsy commissioned by the family was unable to determine the exact cause or manner of death.

Nolan was remembered as more than a name in a heartbreaking case. His family described him as someone who brought happiness to those around him — a young man who loved sports, valued friendships and had ambitions beyond high school.

His mother has spoken about the pain of losing a child and the only question that remains in her mind:

“What happened to our son?”
