UK Family Sells Almost Everything and Moves to Thailand for a Simpler Family Life

THAILAND — Jasmine and Ross Scarr decided to leave behind their life in England and move their family to Thailand in search of more time together and a slower pace of life.

The couple sold their home and most of their belongings before traveling to Thailand with their three children and just five suitcases.

Jasmine, 34, said the decision was intimidating, but the family wanted to prioritize spending more time together rather than continuing a routine dominated by work and other responsibilities.

A Major Change for the Family

Before the move, the family lived in Darlington, England, where they had a home they once expected to remain in for many years.

Ross, 38, worked as a welding engineer and often worked shifts around two hours away from home. Jasmine said the schedule meant the family did not get as much time together as they wanted.

The couple eventually decided that relocating overseas could give them an opportunity to create a different lifestyle.

Jasmine had first fallen in love with Thailand when she visited as a teenager, and the country remained important to her over the years.

Homeschooling Becomes Part of the New Life

After moving, Jasmine began homeschooling their two school-aged sons, Jayden, 7, and Johnson, 5.

Their younger daughter, Mali, is 2.

The boys spend time each day studying subjects such as mathematics and English, while the family also incorporates learning into their daily activities.

Visits to temples and other cultural sites have become opportunities for the children to learn about Thai culture and their new surroundings.

The boys have also joined a soccer team, helping them meet other children and develop a social life outside the home.

A Different Kind of Home

The family now rents a four-bedroom villa with a private pool and garden for about $950 per month, including utilities.

Jasmine says the biggest benefit has been the amount of time the family can spend together.

Rather than having Ross away for long work shifts, the couple can now organize their days around their children, work and exploring Thailand.

Jasmine continues working remotely, often completing her work after the children have gone to bed.

Five Suitcases and a Fresh Start

Selling their possessions was not an easy decision.

The family had previously invested in their English home and had imagined raising their children there.

Jasmine said her father helped reassure her before the move, reminding her that a house itself is less important than the people who make it a home.

That perspective ultimately helped the couple commit to the move.

Exploring Thailand as a Family

The Scarr children are experiencing a lifestyle very different from the one they had in England.

The family spends time exploring their new surroundings, learning about Thai traditions and experiencing everyday life outside the classroom.

Jasmine also hopes her children will eventually learn to speak Thai.

For the family, education is no longer limited to a traditional school setting. They see travel, culture and everyday experiences as an important part of their children’s development.

No Long-Term Plan Yet

The family has committed to staying in Thailand for at least a year, but they have not decided exactly what comes next.

Jasmine and Ross have discussed eventually starting a business in Thailand, although they are deliberately avoiding making too many long-term plans.

For now, they are enjoying their new routine and the additional family time that motivated their move.

Jasmine believes the experience has confirmed that the decision was worthwhile.

After giving up their previous home and possessions, the Scarr family has discovered that their idea of a richer life is not necessarily having more things — but having more time together as a family.
