The Japanese battleship Yamato was sunk on April 7, 1945, in the East China Sea during Operation Ten-Go after heavy attacks by U.S. carrier aircraft. ✈️

Hit by at least 11 torpedoes and 6 bombs, the ship suffered massive flooding and loss of power. Around 2:23 p.m., a catastrophic magazine explosion tore the vessel apart, sending up a towering mushroom-shaped cloud.

❗ Of the 3,332 men aboard, only 276 survived.

The wreck was located in 1985 at a depth of about 1,120 feet, split into two main sections. It remains untouched and is treated as a war grave — marking the final resting place of the largest battleship ever lost in battle.**
