Report of Lions on the Loose Sparks Four-Hour Search in Indiana

MADISON COUNTY, Ind. — A bizarre report of a lioness and her cub roaming through central Indiana prompted a major law-enforcement search Thursday, with deputies and state police using ground teams and thermal drones to search the area.

The search began after a resident reported seeing what appeared to be a roughly 300-pound lioness wearing a blue harness, accompanied by a smaller cub estimated at between 100 and 150 pounds. The animals were reportedly seen near South County Road 50 West in Jackson Township.

Extensive Search Finds No Lions

The report was serious enough to bring together the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police.

Authorities searched fields and surrounding areas for approximately four hours, including the use of thermal-imaging drones designed to detect heat signatures.

But despite the extensive operation, officers were unable to locate either animal.

Authorities ultimately said the reported presence of the lions remained unconfirmed.

Where Did the Report Come From?

According to authorities, the original sighting came from a local resident who said he saw the large animals from his property.

A drone operator also reportedly claimed to have spotted the animals, adding to concerns that the report could be genuine.

However, investigators never obtained physical or visual confirmation from law enforcement officers during the search.

Even more puzzling, officials said no local zoos or animal sanctuaries had reported lions missing. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department also said it was unaware of any permits allowing private lion ownership in the county.

Police Ask Residents to Stay Alert

Although the active search was concluded, authorities encouraged residents in the area to remain aware of their surroundings and immediately report any credible sighting of a large exotic animal.

People were also advised not to approach or attempt to interact with any animal they believe could be a lion.

The unusual report has generated considerable attention online, but authorities continue to stress that the existence of the two supposed lions has not been verified.

A Mystery Remains

For several hours, central Indiana authorities prepared for the possibility that two powerful exotic cats were wandering through the countryside.

They found no lions.

For now, the reported lioness and cub remain a mystery — leaving authorities, residents and curious observers wondering whether the animals were genuinely out there or whether the original sighting was a case of mistaken identity.
