The Shallows 2

Rating: 3.5/5 Shark Bites Back

The original The Shallows (2016) was a lean, mean survival thriller that proved Blake Lively could carry a movie on her own. The Shallows 2: Deeper Waters brings back the shark terror, this time with a new protagonist and a more expansive setting.

The film follows a marine biologist (a fierce newcomer) who returns to the remote beach where the original attack happened to study the great white population. But when a research expedition goes wrong, she finds herself stranded in open water with not one, but a pod of sharks that have learned from the past.

The film trades the single-location tension for a more expansive survival story. The shark attacks are creative and brutal, with a sequence involving a sinking research vessel that rivals Jaws in tension. The protagonist is compelling, and the film explores the ecological themes that were hinted at in the original. It’s not as tight as the first, but it’s a solid thriller.

The Verdict: A worthy sequel that expands the world without losing the terror. Sharks are back, and they’re hungrier.

Final Thought: The ocean is vast. The sharks are patient. You are prey.
