A MIDDLE school teacher has had a bright future with his fiancée cut short after being struck by an undocumented, allegedly drunk driver.

Cameron Lyon, 23, was killed in the impact, while his college sweetheart Abrielle Kerns, 22, was left with serious injuries.

Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, 33, is accused of killing Lyon while driving drunk in his GMC Terrain on US Route 33 in Fairfield County, Ohio, on Sunday.

Uribe-Gonzalez struck their Chevrolet after traveling off the highway and overcorrecting, veering into the opposite lane and hitting the college sweetheart couple.

Lyon was treated on scene and transported to a local hospital, where he later died, while Kerns survived but was admitted to the ICU for serious injuries that required a stint.

Kerns was moved from the ICU to a rehab facility earlier this week, but has a “long road ahead,” said Lyon’s mother Andrea to the Daily Mail.

“He was an amazing person. He was funny. He could bring you out of a bad mood very quickly. He was very witty. He loved his family. He’d just gotten engaged in June to his college sweetheart,” said Andrea of her late son.

Uribe-Gonzalez has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license.

The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that he is in the country illegally, and was previously deported by the Trump administration.

“Cameron had his whole life ahead of him, and that life was stolen by this criminal who never should have been in our country in the first place,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a press release.

“ICE has lodged a detainer asking officials in Ohio to cooperate with us and not release him from jail, so that we can remove him from this country. Deporting illegal aliens is our duty because it saves lives,” he continued.

Uribe-Gonzalez first entered the US illegally through Texas in January 2020, where he was arrested by Border Patrol and deported on April 14 that year before re-entering the country at an unknown time.

He was able to obtain a driver’s license through a Connecticut program granting them to undocumented persons 16 or older if they complete the standard process for their age.

Lyon and Kerns got engaged on a trip to Rhode Island just weeks before the crash, which “became one [they would] cherish forever,” said Kerns in a post to her Facebook page from July.

“I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life making memories with you. Here’s to forever with my favorite person,” it continued.

In the wake of Lyon’s untimely death, his mother has called for stiffer drunk driving laws, and says Uribe-Gonzalez “is not going to consume [her].”

“I’m focused on my son, remembering him, the wonderful person he was, and taking care of Abrielle.”
