Barack and Michelle Obama are mourning the loss of Sunny, the beloved Portuguese Water Dog who became a cherished member of their family and a familiar face during their years in the White House.
Sunny died at age 13, the Obamas announced on September 16, 2026. The family shared memories of a dog whose energetic personality, loyalty and affection made her an unforgettable part of their lives.
Sunny Joined the Obama Family in 2013
Sunny arrived at the White House in August 2013, during Barack Obama’s second term as president.
She joined the family’s other Portuguese Water Dog, Bo, and quickly became an important part of the household.
The Obamas remembered Sunny as energetic and athletic, describing her as a “force of nature” who loved running across the South Lawn, chasing squirrels and birds and turning ordinary moments into adventures.
A Special Bond With the Family
Sunny developed a particularly close relationship with daughters Malia and Sasha.
The family recalled how much she loved the girls, even when they interrupted her naps. She also enjoyed following members of the White House staff around and becoming part of their daily routines.
Sunny was also fiercely protective of Bo.
The two dogs became inseparable companions, and Sunny remained by Bo’s side until his passing in 2021.
A Dog Full of Personality
Sunny had plenty of quirks that made her even more lovable to the family.
Despite being a Portuguese Water Dog, she famously disliked getting wet. She also preferred spending time with people rather than other dogs, and the Obamas jokingly remembered her as a loud and messy drinker.

To the Obama family, she was not simply a famous presidential pet. She was a companion who shared their everyday lives through important years and continued to be part of their family long after they left the White House.
