A 77-year-old Walmart customer, Bert Atienza, was fatally assaulted after a dispute involving a shopping cart at a Virginia Walmart.

Bert and his wife, Josephine, had gone shopping after church when a 17-year-old Walmart employee allegedly pushed a cart into Josephine. Bert confronted the teenager and questioned why he had not apologized.

What happened next turned a minor confrontation into a tragedy.

The Teen’s Parents Got Involved

According to authorities, the teenager’s parents, 44-year-old Travis White and 42-year-old Erika Mitchell, later confronted Bert inside the store.

Police allege that Bert was assaulted during the confrontation. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and later passed away.

The medical examiner determined that Bert suffered blunt-force head trauma and ruled his passing a homicide.

His Wife Lost Her Husband of 42 Years

Josephine was left devastated after losing the man she had shared her life with for more than four decades.

She recalled being with Bert after the assault and watching the situation turn into something she never could have imagined when they walked into Walmart that day.

For the family, Bert was not simply a customer caught in a confrontation. He was a husband, father and loved one whose life was cut short following what began as an argument over a shopping cart.

Murder Charges Followed

White and Mitchell have been charged with second-degree murder and are being held without bond, according to authorities.

The 17-year-old Walmart employee also faces multiple charges related to the incident and is no longer working at the store.
