Cindy Crawford Once Said She Couldn’t Imagine the Pain of Losing a Child

More than a decade before the loss of her son Presley Gerber, Cindy Crawford spoke about a kind of grief she said she could hardly imagine: losing a child.

The supermodel made the deeply personal comment during a 2010 interview, while reflecting on the death of her younger brother, Jeffrey, and the way his passing shaped her mother’s life.

Remembering Her Younger Brother

Crawford recalled that Jeffrey died from leukemia at just 4 years old, two years after being diagnosed with the disease.

Looking back on her mother’s experience, Crawford said she had once wondered why her mother did not respond to the tragedy with anger or bitterness.

Instead, she remembered her mother maintaining her warmth and outlook on life despite everything she had endured.

Crawford said those experiences ultimately brought her closer to her mother and gave her a deeper understanding of the strength it took to keep moving forward.

Motherhood Changed Her Perspective

Becoming a mother herself gave Crawford a completely different perspective on what her own mother had experienced.

“Now I’m a mom myself, I’ve really come to appreciate her outlook on life,” Crawford said at the time.

She then acknowledged how difficult it was for her to even imagine losing a child.

Those words, spoken when Presley and his sister Kaia were still young, have taken on a heartbreaking significance following Presley’s death.

The Loss of Her Son

Presley Gerber, Crawford’s only son with husband Rande Gerber, died on September 20 at age 27 at a rehabilitation facility in Santa Monica, California.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has not publicly established his cause of death, and the family has asked for privacy as they grieve.

Presley had pursued a modeling career from a young age, following his mother and later his sister into fashion. He also spoke publicly about his struggles with mental health and substance use, hoping that sharing his experiences could encourage more honest conversations.

Crawford’s earlier reflections now offer a painful reminder of how profoundly her understanding of loss was shaped by her own childhood.

She had once watched her mother endure the loss of a young child. Years later, she became a mother herself and recognized just how devastating such a loss could be.
