Firefighters in Pennsylvania got quite the surprise when they got a call about a tree rescue and found a large dog, not a cat.

The Gladwyne Volunteer Fire Company (GVFC) in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, announced on Facebook that several of its firefighters helped rescue a golden retriever that had become stuck in a tree on Monday, July 13.

“Dog Stuck In A Tree? ……… Hold On A Minute!,” the department joked on social media. “Yes, the fire service has been dealing with cats stuck in trees for many years now, but in Gladwyne we like to be unique.”

Firefighters said the golden retriever, named Bentley, somehow got trapped on a branch of a large tree. The firefighters noted that the particular tree that the canine ended up in was surrounded by “a large amount of heavy brush.”

Firefighters said they do not know how Bentley got stuck in the “precarious position” he was found in, but the dog needed their help to get down safely.

The GVFC shared photos from the rescue, including firefighters setting up a long silver ladder that reached a branch near the top of the tree. In the photos, the dog watches from above as firefighters set up their equipment and climb to his position.

One firefighter appears to hold the ladder steady at the bottom as another climbs up to make the rescue.

A final photo shows a firefighter reaching out to grab the dog, with Bentley also extending his paws out toward the rescuer.

“Thankfully, we were able to successfully ‘rescue’ Bentley and get him back on the ground where he belongs,” GVFC said in a statement.

“There were no injuries to Bentley or any firefighters in this incident,” the agency added.

Several commenters joked about the position the canine found himself in, including one person who responded to the post: “OMG, maybe he was looking to see if he could find his house from more of an aerial view. I am so happy he is safe and back home. Great work as always!!”

Another joked that Bentley was quite the “adventurous pup.”

The nearby Belmont Hills Fire Company also joked that the firefighters “should’ve called Mesa for backup!” Alongside their message, they shared a photo of a golden retriever sitting in the front seat of a parked firefighter truck.
