What began as an ordinary journey across Indonesia’s seas suddenly became a desperate fight for survival when the Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry erupted in flames off the coast of Madura Island.

The ferry was traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi when fire broke out on the morning of August 2. Thick black smoke quickly engulfed much of the vessel, sending passengers scrambling for safer areas as the flames spread.
