A Rope on the Sidewalk Led to a Strangled Woman’s Body. Her Killer Just Learned His Fate

Margaret Orozco Jackson, 47, was found brutally beaten in California in 1990

A California man has been sentenced 35 years after he brutally killed a 47-year-old woman.

Margaret Orozco Jackson’s body was found on a hillside in San Diego in 1990, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Randall Oyler, 65, was convicted on May 19 of this year of killing her, according to the statement.

The investigation began on July 11, 1990, when a woman on her way to work found a rope on the side of the road, the DA’s office said. She followed it down a hillside and eventually came upon Jackson’s body.

Jackson had been beaten and strangled with the rope that had led the witness to her body.

Prosecutors said at Oyler’s sentencing last week that Jackson had been brutally beaten, sustaining especially brutal wounds to her head, and that Oyler had strangled her for about five to six minutes, until she died.

Investigators had no leads for decades until 2018, when Oyler’s DNA was entered into the national DNA database for a drug-trafficking conviction, the DA’s office said in its statement.

Authorities matched his DNA to evidence found under Jackson’s fingernails and from other parts of her body.

Oyler was convicted of first-degree murder in May.

At his sentencing last week, Jackson’s niece condemned his actions and asked him, “Do you have any remorse for what you did?” She went on to ask him to reflect on his actions while he sits in prison.

Oyler has been sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison.
