A mother was shopping with her children inside a Tulsa, Oklahoma, Walmart when a stranger approached her.

At first, police say, the interaction looked like a conversation.

The man briefly spoke to the woman about her two children.

Then, according to investigators, he suddenly reached into her shopping cart, removed her 1-year-old child and placed the toddler into a cart of his own.

He began walking away.

What happened next unfolded within minutes: the mother confronted the stranger and got her child back, rushed both of her children into a Walmart bathroom and locked the door, while store employees removed the man from the building and called authorities.

Police later located 50-year-old Marshall Dixon sitting at a nearby bus stop.

When officers asked him about the reported abduction, police say his response was startlingly direct:

“Yeah, I did that.”

Dixon was arrested and booked into the Tulsa County Jail on suspicion of kidnapping. He has not been convicted.

The Encounter Began With a Conversation About Her Children

Tulsa Police said officers were called to the Walmart near 68th Street and Memorial Drive shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The mother, whose identity has not been publicly released, told investigators she had been shopping with her children when Dixon allegedly approached.

Police say he briefly spoke with her about the children.

There was nothing in the police account indicating that the mother knew him beforehand.

Then the encounter allegedly changed almost instantly.

According to police, Dixon took the woman’s 1-year-old directly from her shopping cart.

He did not simply pick up the child and remain there.

Authorities say he placed the toddler into his own shopping cart and began walking away.

Surveillance images released by Tulsa Police appear to capture part of the incident inside an aisle containing household merchandise.

For the mother, however, there was little time to process what was happening.

She acted.

The Mother Went After Him and Took Her Baby Back

Police say the woman immediately confronted Dixon.

She was able to retrieve the 1-year-old before he left the store with the child.

The mother then apparently shifted from confronting the alleged threat to protecting both children.

She took them into a Walmart bathroom, locked herself inside with them and called police.

That detail underscores just how quickly an ordinary shopping trip had turned into an emergency.

The alleged attempt did not begin outside in a parking lot or in an isolated area.

It happened inside a major retailer, with the child’s mother only feet away.

And according to police, the alleged suspect did not need a long opportunity.

The transition from conversation to allegedly taking the toddler happened during the same encounter.

Walmart Employees Also Stepped In

Store employees became involved after learning what had happened.

Tulsa Police said Walmart staff removed Dixon from the premises and also contacted authorities.

By the time officers arrived, he was no longer inside the store.

But investigators did not have to search far.

Police located a man matching the suspect’s description sitting at a nearby bus stop.

The encounter there added one of the most unusual details to the case.

When officers questioned Dixon about the allegation, he did not respond with a denial, according to the police account.

Instead, authorities say he told them:

“Yeah, I did that.”

Police then arrested Dixon and booked him into the Tulsa County Jail on a kidnapping complaint.

An arrest is not a conviction, and the allegations against Dixon will have to be addressed through the criminal court process.

The Mother’s Reaction May Have Prevented the Situation From Becoming Far Worse

The case ended with the child safely back with the mother.

That outcome was not automatic.

According to police, it happened because she confronted the man and physically recovered her toddler before he could get farther away.

Afterward, she did not continue arguing with him or remain exposed in the aisle.

She moved both children into a secured space and contacted authorities.

Walmart employees then dealt with the suspect and helped summon police.

The entire sequence created several barriers between the alleged attempt and a potentially far more serious outcome: the mother’s immediate intervention, store staff involvement and officers arriving while the suspect was reportedly still nearby.

There is no indication in the reports that either child suffered physical injuries.

Dixon was identified by Tulsa Police as the 50-year-old man arrested in connection with the Sept. 8 incident.

Investigators may seek to establish why Dixon allegedly targeted this particular family.
