Parents Speak Out After PennWest Soccer Player Karoline Heintz Is Found Dead

CALIFORNIA, Pennsylvania — The parents of 18-year-old Karoline Heintz are speaking publicly about their daughter after her death just as she was preparing to begin a new chapter as a college soccer player.

Heintz, a recent high school graduate and incoming freshman at Pennsylvania Western University, had committed to play for the school’s women’s soccer team. Her family described her as kind, intelligent and deeply loved as they called for justice.

“It has been devastating for family, friends, and the whole community,” her family said in a statement released through Pennsylvania State Police. They described Karoline as a “kind, smart, beautiful girl” and said they want justice for their daughter.

A Promising Young Athlete

Karoline had recently graduated from Peters Township High School and was preparing to begin her college career.

She had signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer at PennWest California and was looking forward to competing at the collegiate level.

Her teammates remembered her as a cheerful and positive presence who was frequently smiling and brought energy to the team.

The PennWest women’s soccer team said there were few words to describe the pain of losing their teammate, emphasizing that Karoline was much more than the circumstances surrounding her death.

The team has said it plans to honor her memory throughout the upcoming season.

Family Became Concerned When She Did Not Return

According to investigators, Karoline had spent time with her family on Wednesday evening before leaving to return to her college residence.

When she failed to arrive and could not be reached, her family became concerned and requested a welfare check.

Her family also used an AirTag associated with her vehicle to help determine its location. Police were eventually directed to her Jeep near the California Borough Library.

Officers arrived shortly after midnight and discovered Karoline inside the vehicle.

Authorities immediately began investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Boyfriend Arrested

Pennsylvania State Police later arrested 18-year-old Royce Moser, who authorities say was Karoline’s boyfriend.

Investigators allege that the two had met outside Moser’s father’s home in North Strabane Township and were discussing their relationship and future plans.

According to police, the conversation escalated and Moser allegedly retrieved a knife from inside the residence before attacking Karoline.

Moser has been charged with criminal homicide along with several other offenses connected to the investigation.

The allegations have not been proven in court, and Moser is presumed innocent unless convicted.

His Mother Also Faces Charges

Investigators allege that after the incident, Moser went to his mother’s home seeking help.

His mother, Rachel Moser, 57, has also been arrested and faces charges related to allegedly helping conceal evidence and assisting her son after the incident.

Authorities say investigators believe the mother and son attempted to clean the vehicle and clothing before leaving Karoline’s Jeep near the university area.

Rachel Moser later apologized to Karoline’s family while being taken into custody, saying she was sorry that her son had taken a life.

She faces charges including hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence and obstruction, among other allegations.

Parents Remember Who Karoline Was

For Karoline’s parents, the case is about far more than the criminal investigation.

They want people to remember their daughter for the life she was building before the tragedy.

She was an athlete, daughter, sister, friend and student who had just graduated from high school and was preparing for college.

Her soccer teammates have also emphasized her personality and the happiness she brought to those around her.

A memorial has been established near the university, while friends and members of the community have gathered to remember her.

University Community Mourns

PennWest University said it was deeply saddened by Karoline’s death and offered condolences to her family, friends and everyone affected.

The university said the incident occurred off campus and that its police department was cooperating with Pennsylvania State Police.

Her death has left teammates preparing for a season without someone they expected to see on the field.

Friends and supporters have also organized fundraising efforts intended to honor Karoline’s memory, including efforts connected to scholarships and organizations supporting people affected by domestic violence.

Investigation Continues

Moser and his mother remain in custody as the legal process moves forward.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Karoline’s death, while preliminary hearings are expected later this month.

For her parents and those who knew her, however, the legal case is only one part of the story.

Karoline had been preparing for college, pursuing soccer and looking ahead to the future.
