Calif. Woman Watches 3 of Her Dogs Die, Including Her Service Dog, After Truck Hits Her While Walking

A deaf California woman lost three of her dogs, including her service dog, when they were hit by a truck while on a walk.

Linda Sekany of Roseville, Calif., lost her service dog Jersey, along with pets Dugan and Lafter, local news outlet KCRA reported. A fourth dog, named Karat, survived the crash.

“They are my life,” Sekany, who survived the incident with no major injuries, told the news station. “I live my life for these dogs. In one fell swoop, my family is gone.”

She told KCRA that she recalled being “thrown” about five or six feet in the crash.

“I looked at this truck. He was stopped, and I’m like, ‘Good. He’s waiting for us to cross, which is the appropriate thing to do,’ ” Sekany told the outlet. “The next thing I know, he pulled out and just ran over us.”

The truck driver, whose identity has not been publicly released, reportedly cooperated with first responders at the scene, according to KCRA. It is not immediately clear if police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Jersey, who Sekany told the news station was her “ability to function in the world,” suffered a crushed pelvis, and Sekany made the difficult decision to have him put down.

Another of Sekany’s dogs, Dugan, suffered a cardiac arrest at the scene, per KCRA. Her dogs Lafter and Karat survived the immediate aftermath of the crash, though Lafter ultimately fell ill and was hospitalized amid the trauma of the accident. Lafter has since died, while Karat’s condition remains unclear, per an update from the news station on Sunday, July 12.

Sekany told KCRA that the process of finding and obtaining a service dog took several years, and she is unsure of where to start in the wake of Jersey’s shocking death. Jersey regularly assisted Sekany with daily tasks and alerted her to potentially dangerous situations, including when alarms sounded that she could not hear.

Friends of Sekany started a GoFundMe to support her sole surviving dog Karat’s recovery journey, and to support her as she seeks a new service dog. The fundraiser description indicates that she has long volunteered for a national service dog organization and is a dedicated volunteer with Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue.

According to the fundraiser, the accident occurred on July 1.

“Anyone who knows Linda knows that she would never ask for help,” the description reads. “She is the first person to show up for others and the last person to think of herself. That’s why we’re asking on her behalf.”

“Right now, we want Linda to be able to focus on healing, grieving, and caring for her dogs—not worrying about the significant veterinary expenses ahead,” the description adds, adding that Sekany “has spent years giving of herself to others.”

“She has poured countless hours, endless compassion, and an open heart into improving the lives of both people and dogs,” the description reads. “Her kindness has touched so many, and she has given far more than any of us could ever repay.”

The fundraiser has raised over $60,000 as of Monday, July 13, surpassing its $50,000 goal.
