A 69-year-old Long Island father died after his adult son allegedly stabbed him multiple times inside his Mastic apartment on Labor Day, according to Suffolk County prosecutors.

Sage Arias-Brown, 33, allegedly entered his father Edward Brown’s apartment at around 12:30 a.m. Monday and attacked him before fleeing the scene. Prosecutors said Brown suffered multiple stab wounds to his abdomen and chest.

Despite his severe injuries, Brown managed to reach a telephone and call 911. He reported that he had been stabbed before collapsing while waiting for emergency responders.

Police and personnel from the Mastic Volunteer Ambulance Company arrived and attempted lifesaving measures, but Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness reportedly heard Arias-Brown enter the apartment and heard Brown screaming for help. The witness then saw the younger man leave the building, prosecutors said.

Police arrested Arias-Brown a short time later. He was charged with second-degree murder and pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday. He was ordered held without bail and is scheduled to return to court Friday.

Arias-Brown’s attorney, Katherine Fernandez, told the court that her client has a history of mental illness and is also facing an unrelated robbery case.

Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the stabbing, and prosecutors have not detailed what happened immediately before the attack.

Arias-Brown is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
