A 17-year-old boy went to meet a group of young people in Narbonne, France, on the night of June 19.

He never made it home.

Louis Hervé was allegedly lured to an isolated construction site, where investigators say he was attacked by five young men. The assault left him unconscious with severe injuries.

Louis was discovered the following morning and rushed to hospital. His condition was critical, and despite emergency treatment, he died from his injuries on June 23.

His death triggered a major investigation and widespread shock in Narbonne.

Five young suspects placed in custody
Investigators quickly identified five suspects, reportedly using footage of the attack circulating on social media along with phone records.

The suspects were aged between 16 and 19. Three were minors, while two were adults.

All five were placed under investigation and held in pre-trial detention. Prosecutors said the evidence suggested that the attack had been planned and that Louis had been deliberately lured to the construction site.

The initial proceedings reportedly involved charges related to attempted murder, with the case expected to be reclassified following Louis’ death.

The motive remains unclear.

Authorities have also said that, at this stage, there was no established evidence supporting claims that the attack was racially motivated.

Louis’ family is demanding justice
For Louis’ father, Nicolas Hervé, the legal proceedings cannot bring his son back.

He remembered Louis as a good-hearted teenager who loved music, played guitar and enjoyed going fishing with his father.

“He was a really good boy,” Nicolas said while speaking about the son he had lost.

The family has also urged people not to turn Louis’ death into a political battle. Their focus, they say, is on remembering their son and seeing justice carried out.

Meanwhile, people across Narbonne gathered for memorials and marches, leaving flowers and messages in Louis’ memory.

A case that is far from over
The five suspects remain detained while the investigation continues.

Because three of those charged were minors at the time of the alleged attack, their potential punishment could differ substantially from that faced by the two adult suspects under French law. The final legal classification and any eventual sentence will depend on the continuing investigation and court proceedings.

For Louis’ family, however, the most important fact is painfully simple:

A 17-year-old who still had his entire future ahead of him is gone.
