A 41-year-old man has been charged with murder in the death of a 27-year-old New York City mother who police say was beaten to death inside her Washington Heights apartment in front of her 7-year-old daughter.

Tiliek Shamel Thompson surrendered to police Saturday and was later charged in connection with the killing of Lovay Williams, who was found unresponsive inside her apartment on West 156th Street on Sept. 6.

Mother Found Dead During Wellness Check
Police conducting a wellness check shortly after 1:30 p.m. found Williams suffering from severe injuries to her face and neck. Emergency medical workers pronounced her dead at the scene.

Her 7-year-old daughter was inside the apartment at the time of the killing, according to police and reports.

Authorities initially identified Thompson as a person of interest before he turned himself in at the 33rd Precinct. He was later escorted from the station by detectives as relatives and others gathered outside.

Video of Thompson being led from the precinct showed relatives shouting at him as officers moved him through the crowd.

Family Struggles to Understand the Killing
Williams’ relatives have described the killing as devastating and difficult to comprehend.

Her brother, Nuquan Williams, said whoever was responsible should be held accountable. Asia Walker, who described herself as Williams’ “God sister,” said Thompson and Williams had known each other for a long time and had reportedly been in a relationship.

Walker said she could not recall Williams telling her about any serious argument between the pair, leaving the family struggling to understand what led to the deadly attack.

Flowers, balloons and candles have since been placed outside Williams’ apartment building as loved ones mourn her death.

Suspect’s Attorney Urges Public to Wait
Thompson’s attorney, Neville Dexter, urged people not to reach a conclusion about his client’s guilt based on social media posts that circulated before Thompson surrendered.

The attorney said the circumstances surrounding Williams’ death still needed to be established through the legal process.

Thompson is facing a murder charge and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The investigation remains ongoing.
