NFL quarterback announces abrupt retirement at just 31 after $5m career saw him throw ZERO touchdowns

AN NFL quarterback has announced their abrupt retirement at just 31 having thrown zero touchdowns in their $5 million career.

The veteran NFL journeyman was due to play for the Carolina Panthers this season.

Will Grier has retired from the NFL aged just 31

He was due to play for the Carolina Panthers this season

However, the Panthers have now confirmed that quarterback Will Grier is set to retire instead.

Grier spent last season as a backup to Dak Prescott at the Dallas Cowboys before penning a deal with Carolina in April.

He was all set to backup Bryce Young at the NFL franchise who drafted him in 2019 with a third-round pick.

But now instead the Panthers have placed him on the reserve/retired list as he goes in a different direction altogether.

Grier has appeared in two regular season games in his seven-year NFL career, both in his rookie season.

He finishes his NFL career having completed 28 of his 52 throws for 228 yards and four interceptions in a pair of losses.

Since leaving Carolina in 2021, he has been on the roster at the Cowboys, Bengals, Patriots, Chargers and the Eagles.

He has earned $4.9million across his time in the league, per Spotrac.

The move leaves the Panthers with only three quarterbacks heading into training camp.

They currently have starter Young, veteran backup Kenny Pickett and undrafted rookie Haynes King.

King will likely get a lot of reps in preseason as a result of Grier’s retirement from the NFL.

Grier played his college football for the Florida Gators between 2014 and 2015 before moving to West Virginia between 2016 to 2018.

He was named as the Big 12’s Offensive Newcomer of the Year in 2017.

Grier also made the second-team All Big 12 in 2018 before being drafted 100th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
