Scottish Mother Sentenced to Six Years After Baby’s Death in Tragic Incident
ABERDEENSHIRE, Scotland — A Scottish mother has been sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of culpable homicide in connection with the death of her infant daughter, Dahlia-Rose Gartshore.
Courtney Gartshore, 28, was convicted following a trial at the High Court in Aberdeen over the death of her daughter in September 2023. The court heard that the baby suffered severe heat-related injuries while Gartshore was responsible for her care.
Emergency responders who arrived at the family home in Peterhead on September 30, 2023, were reportedly initially unable to determine what had happened because of the severity of the child’s injuries.
Dahlia-Rose was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mother Had Been Drinking
Prosecutors said Gartshore had been drinking while she was caring for her daughter.
Police launched an investigation into the baby’s death, and Gartshore was arrested in November 2023. She was ultimately convicted of culpable homicide rather than murder.
The sentence has attracted significant public attention because of the circumstances surrounding the case and Gartshore’s conduct while awaiting trial.

Controversy Over Overseas Holiday
Gartshore was reportedly allowed to travel to Turkey while on bail in May before her trial.
Photographs from the trip later circulated online, showing her on holiday with family members. The images generated strong criticism, with opponents arguing that someone facing such serious charges should not have been permitted to leave the country.
The controversy surrounding the trip has added to public anger following the sentencing.

Police Remember the Child
Detective Inspector James Callander, who worked on the investigation, described the case as deeply distressing for everyone involved.
He emphasized that children are particularly vulnerable and that investigators had been focused on establishing what happened to Dahlia-Rose and ensuring that the person responsible was brought before the courts.
The investigation and subsequent court proceedings have lasted nearly three years, leaving the child’s death at the center of a case that has generated widespread public concern.
Gartshore will now serve her six-year sentence in prison, bringing the criminal proceedings over her daughter’s death to a close.
