An unidentified object crashed and exploded inside eastern Poland early Thursday as Russia launched one of its largest long-range attacks on Ukraine in recent months, raising fresh concerns about regional security along NATO’s eastern border.

Polish authorities confirmed the incident occurred roughly 90 kilometers (55 miles) inside Polish territory while Russian missiles and drones were targeting multiple locations across western Ukraine.

Explosion Reported in Eastern Poland

According to the Polish military, the unidentified object landed in an undeveloped area near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin Province.

Residents reported hearing a powerful explosion, prompting emergency services to respond to the scene.

Authorities immediately secured the area as investigators began working to determine exactly what had entered Polish territory.

At this stage, officials have not confirmed the origin or nature of the object.

Polish Airspace Breach Reported

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Polish airspace had been violated during Russia’s large-scale missile attack against western Ukraine.

He confirmed he was traveling to the crash site as authorities continued their investigation.

The Polish military said its air defense systems tracked at least a dozen missiles flying over western Ukraine during the overnight assault, with several considered a potential threat to Polish airspace.

Officials have not confirmed whether the object that crashed was a Russian missile.

Ukraine Claims Russian Missile Entered Poland

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that a Russian cruise missile crossed into Polish territory during Russia’s massive overnight attack.

However, it remains unclear whether he was referring to the same object that later crashed near Tarnawa-Kolonia.

Neither Polish nor NATO officials have publicly confirmed the object’s identity.

Russia Launches Large-Scale Assault

Russia’s Ministry of Defense said it carried out a massive strike using long-range precision weapons launched from land, air, and sea, along with attack drones aimed at military facilities across Ukraine.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the overnight assault involved more than 70 missiles and over 280 attack drones.

Ukraine’s air defenses reportedly intercepted more than 260 drones, though Zelensky noted that the country continues to face a critical shortage of air defense missiles supplied by international partners.

Civilian Areas Hit Across Ukraine

The attacks caused widespread destruction across several regions of Ukraine.

Zelensky said dozens of homes, businesses, and infrastructure facilities were damaged or destroyed.

At least eight people were killed, including children, while dozens of others were injured.

In Kyiv, one person was killed as residents spent the night sheltering inside crowded metro stations while air raid sirens sounded across the capital.

Images from the city showed families sleeping beneath blankets and inside makeshift tents on subway platforms as missile strikes continued overhead.

Family Killed in Missile Strike

One of the deadliest attacks occurred in the village of Radushne, near the southern city of Kryvyi Rih.

According to Ukrainian officials, a ballistic missile completely destroyed a family home.

Two parents and three children were killed in the strike.

Officials identified two of the children as girls aged 5 and 12.

Two additional children were rescued alive from the rubble.

Emergency crews also continued rescue operations in the western city of Lviv, where residents remained trapped beneath the debris of a damaged residential building.

Incident Raises NATO Concerns

Although Poland has frequently scrambled fighter jets during Russian attacks on western Ukraine, confirmed violations of its airspace remain relatively uncommon.

Any confirmed Russian strike reaching deep inside the territory of a NATO member state would likely be viewed as a significant escalation of the conflict.

NATO has not yet issued an official statement regarding Thursday’s incident.

Previous cross-border incidents have heightened tensions.

In September 2025, NATO fighter aircraft intercepted several Russian drones that entered Polish airspace.

Earlier, in November 2022, two people were killed when a Ukrainian air defense missile accidentally landed in the Polish village of Przewodów during efforts to intercept Russian missiles.

Ukraine Continues Long-Range Drone Operations

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces also launched drone strikes inside Russia.

Regional officials in Russia’s Penza region reported that a warehouse belonging to online retailer Wildberries caught fire following a Ukrainian drone attack.

Authorities said one person was injured while approximately 200 people were evacuated from the facility.

Ukraine has previously stated that some Wildberries distribution centers are legitimate military targets because they allegedly support Russian frontline logistics, a claim denied by Moscow.

Investigation Continues

Polish investigators are continuing to examine the unidentified object that crashed inside the country as officials work to determine its origin.

The incident occurred amid one of the largest Russian attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks, underscoring the growing risks posed by the conflict to neighboring countries.

As authorities gather more evidence, both Poland and its NATO allies are expected to closely monitor developments surrounding the airspace violation and the object’s identity.
