Newborn Dies After Family Dog Bit Him More Than 180 Times Inside Filthy Indiana Home

MARKLE, Indiana — A one-week-old baby suffered one of the most horrific fatal dog attacks ever recorded after the family’s pet allegedly bit him more than 180 times inside a home investigators described as filthy, bug-infested and unfit for human habitation.

The infant, Jason Anthony Weaver, died despite desperate CPR efforts after relatives found the family’s 5-year-old husky-pit bull mix, Chomp, dragging the newborn across the floor. The case has led to multiple criminal charges against family members, while the baby’s father has now been sentenced to 16 years in prison.

A Tragedy Unfolded in Minutes

According to court documents, Jason was only seven days old when the attack happened in September 2025.

His father, Austin Kinsey, told police he had been playing video games in the same room as the baby before briefly leaving to speak with relatives in another room.

Moments later, Jason’s grandfather heard unusual noises and rushed inside, where he discovered Chomp dragging the newborn by his body.

Police officers and paramedics immediately began CPR, but the infant could not be saved.

Autopsy Revealed Shocking Injuries

The autopsy concluded that Jason suffered more than 180 bite wounds across his head and body.

Medical examiners also documented devastating internal injuries, including:

• Brain hemorrhages
• Multiple rib fractures
• Tears to both lungs
• Extensive cuts and bruises over nearly his entire body

Investigators described the injuries as catastrophic and consistent with a prolonged mauling.

Home Declared Unfit for Living

When officers entered the residence, they reported a strong odor of trash, dirt and animals throughout the house.

Court records say the home was filled with overflowing garbage, dirty dishes, piles of clothing and widespread insect infestation. Bugs were reportedly found crawling on the baby’s car seat, and officers said debris was so severe they could barely walk through parts of the home.

Following the investigation, the Huntington County Health Department ordered the family to vacate the property after declaring it unsafe for habitation.

Dog Had History of Aggression

Although relatives initially described Chomp as gentle around Jason, they also admitted the dog had previously bitten people, attacked other animals and displayed jealous behavior.

One family member told investigators they kept a firearm in the house specifically in case Chomp became violent.

The dog was euthanized after the attack.

Multiple Family Members Face Charges

Austin Kinsey was originally charged with two counts of child neglect and harboring a non-immunized dog that caused serious injury.

As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped the most serious neglect charge in exchange for a 16-year prison sentence, which was handed down this week.

Jason’s mother, Violet Weaver, is scheduled for a plea hearing later this month, while the baby’s grandparents and uncle continue facing related criminal charges.

A Preventable Loss

The case has horrified communities across Indiana because it combined two devastating factors: an infant left vulnerable around a dog with a known history of aggression, and a home investigators say was dangerously neglected.

For prosecutors, the prison sentence reflects accountability for a tragedy they believe was entirely preventable.
