Heart-stopping video shows the moment two firefighting helicopters crashed in mid-air while battling a raging wildfire in Greece on Sunday, killing two crewmembers, officials said.

The terrifying footage obtained by Kefalonia Press shows one of the helicopters clip the rotor of the second, causing it to burst into flames and plummet to the ground.

Two helicopter crew members tragically died in the crash, while two others miraculously survived, the Hellenic Fire Service confirmed to ABC News.

The two helicopters had been leased by the local fire department to combat a blaze in Psatha, west of Athens.

One of the helicopters is seen clipping the rotor of the second, causing it to burst into flames.

The chopper then plummets to the ground.

Authorities told the outlet that a Greek national and a Danish national were killed in the accident, while another Greek national and a British national survived.

The names of the crew involved in the crash haven’t been released.

The helicopters had been leased by the local fire department to combat a blaze in Psatha, west of Athens, BBC News reported.

Authorities told ABC the two choppers had taken off from Elefsina Air Base in the western Attica region, not far from the wildfire area where they were operating.

The crews were on their way to battle two fires that ignited Saturday morning and were quickly spread by strong winds, officials said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

It comes as Greece, along with numerous European countries, continues to battle wildfires brought on by weeks of scorching temps.

On the Greek island of Crete, fires burned thousands of acres of land, forcing more than 8,000 people to be temporarily evacuated.

Some 500 people, mostly tourists, had to be evacuated during a blaze in central Greece on Friday.

Blazes have also broken out on the islands of Paros, Andros and Kalymnos.
