Brad Pitt Reveals He’s Drinking Again After Seven Years of Sobriety

Brad Pitt has revealed that he is no longer completely sober after maintaining seven years without alcohol, opening up about his changing relationship with drinking in a candid new interview.

The 62-year-old Oscar winner made the revelation in an interview with Esquire, where he reflected on addiction, recovery and the difficult period of his life surrounding the breakdown of his marriage to Angelina Jolie.

Pitt said he has returned to drinking, but emphasized that he now approaches alcohol in a much more controlled way than he did in the past.

“I Can Have a Few”

Pitt explained that he now believes he can drink a limited amount without returning to the destructive patterns of his past.

He described his current approach as more restrained and said he can have “a few” glasses of wine rather than consuming alcohol heavily.

The actor’s comments represent a significant change from the period following his 2016 split from Jolie, when he decided to stop drinking entirely and began participating in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Seven Years Without Alcohol

Pitt previously spoke publicly about his sobriety in 2019, revealing that he had been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

At the time, he described the experience as an important part of rebuilding his life and confronting problems surrounding his drinking.

He later discussed the experience again during a 2025 podcast appearance, describing his first AA meeting as transformative and emphasizing how much he valued being able to speak honestly with other people struggling with addiction.

A Difficult Period After His Divorce

Pitt’s decision to stop drinking came during one of the most turbulent periods of his personal life.

Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016, shortly after an incident aboard a private plane involving Pitt, Jolie and their children. Allegations surrounding the incident became part of the couple’s lengthy legal dispute, which ultimately lasted years.

Their divorce was finalized in 2024 after an eight-year legal battle.

Pitt has since spoken about how emotionally difficult that period was, describing the pain he experienced as severe enough that he could understand why someone might view suicide as an escape, while emphasizing that he was not actually suicidal.

Finding a Different Relationship With Alcohol

Pitt’s latest comments suggest that his recovery has evolved rather than simply ending.

Instead of describing his return to alcohol as a return to his former lifestyle, he characterized it as something he now approaches with greater restraint.

That distinction is important given his previous history with alcohol. Pitt has openly acknowledged that drinking had become a serious problem in his life and that sobriety helped him confront issues he had previously avoided.

His decision to drink again is therefore likely to generate significant discussion among fans who followed his recovery journey.

Pitt Previously Credited AA With Changing His Life

The actor has repeatedly spoken positively about Alcoholics Anonymous.

In earlier interviews, he described the environment as one where people could openly acknowledge their mistakes without being judged.

Pitt said the experience allowed him to confront parts of himself that he had previously kept hidden and helped him recognize that he needed to make significant changes.

His openness about addiction has also made him one of Hollywood’s more prominent celebrities to publicly discuss recovery.

A New Chapter

Pitt’s latest revelation comes as he continues a busy period in his acting career.

Following the success of F1, the actor is preparing for the release of Heart of the Beast, an action-survival film scheduled for September 2026.

But beyond his movie career, his comments about alcohol offer a rare glimpse into the personal changes he has experienced over the past decade.

After years of describing complete sobriety as an important part of rebuilding his life, Pitt is now acknowledging that his relationship with alcohol has changed once again.

Whether his new approach remains sustainable is something only time will tell. For now, Pitt says he has learned to approach drinking with considerably more restraint than during the period that ultimately led him to seek sobriety.
