Loyal Dog Stays by 3-Year-Old Boy’s Side Until Rescuers Find Him Safe

ATCHISON COUNTY, Kan. — A 3-year-old boy who went missing in rural Atchison County was found safe Thursday afternoon, and responders say his family dog may have played a crucial role in keeping him safe.

Emergency crews were called to help search for the child after the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance. Search teams from several local agencies joined the effort.

The boy was eventually located and safely reunited with his family.

But there was another member of the search party who immediately became the center of attention: Maverick, the family dog.

Maverick Never Left His Side

When rescuers found the child, Maverick was right there with him.

According to Atchison County Emergency Services, the dog appeared to have remained beside the boy throughout the entire ordeal, staying with him until rescuers arrived.

Responders affectionately described Maverick as the “bestus boy ever” and made sure he received plenty of treats and attention after the rescue.

While authorities have not provided details about exactly how long the boy had been missing or where he was found, Maverick’s presence offered an especially reassuring ending to an otherwise frightening situation.

Community Comes Together

The successful search involved numerous emergency agencies, law-enforcement officers and volunteers.

Atchison County Emergency Services thanked the boy’s family, volunteers, the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, local fire departments, communications personnel, the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks and other agencies that assisted with the search.

For the family, the most important outcome was that their little boy came home safely.

And for Maverick, there was a well-earned reward waiting after his faithful vigil: lots of treats, scratches and plenty of praise.

Sometimes, the hero of a rescue doesn’t wear a uniform.

Sometimes, he has four paws and refuses to leave your side.
