A former U.S. soldier has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted in the death of her young daughter, ending a case that shocked a North Carolina community for nearly a decade.

Jeanie Kassandra Ditty, 33, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Macy Grace Ditty, who died in December 2015 — just days before her third birthday.

Prosecutors said the toddler arrived at a hospital suffering from severe injuries consistent with physical abuse. Medical experts determined she had suffered catastrophic brain injuries that could not be survived.

Investigators said Macy had experienced numerous traumatic injuries during a period when her mother was the only caregiver with access to her.

After Macy’s death, Ditty told others that her daughter had died from a medical accident. She later worked with a photographer to create a series of emotional “afterlife” images showing her with a ghost-like version of her daughter.

The photographer, who believed he was helping a grieving mother, later said he was unaware of the circumstances surrounding Macy’s death at the time.

The images showed a mother and child together in imagined scenes — including walking hand-in-hand and sharing quiet moments — but after the truth emerged, the photos became a disturbing part of the case.

The photographer later called the situation one of the most painful experiences of his career, saying he hoped the images at least preserved a memory of the little girl who lost her life.

Ditty’s case first went to trial in 2020, but the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision. Years later, after a second trial, jurors deliberated for only a few hours before finding her guilty.

Along with a life sentence for murder, Ditty received an additional sentence related to child abuse.
