Heartbroken Montana Father Speaks After Family Massacre Claimed the Lives of His Wife and Four Children

BILLINGS, Montana — A Montana firefighter has broken his silence after losing his wife, four children and three other relatives in one of the deadliest family massacres in recent U.S. history, describing the desperate moments he realized something terrible had happened.

Adam Ghekiere, an airport rescue firefighter, was working at a local airshow on Sunday evening when emergency radio traffic reported a shooting near his in-laws’ home outside Billings. What followed, he says, became every parent’s worst nightmare.

“I tried calling the house and no one answered,” Ghekiere recalled. “I checked my kids’ locations, and no one answered. I feared the worst.”

Eight Family Members Killed During Sunday Dinner

Authorities say the victims had gathered for their regular Sunday family dinner when a relative allegedly opened fire inside the home before the house was engulfed in flames.

Among the eight victims were:

• Megan Ghekiere, Adam’s wife
• Landon, 15, and Charlotte, 12, Adam’s children
• Owen, 13, and Chloe, 7, Megan’s children from a previous marriage
• Megan’s 92-year-old grandmother
• Two additional adult family members

Police say the suspected gunman later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators have not yet released an official motive.

“They Wouldn’t Let Us Get Any Closer”

Ghekiere rushed toward the neighborhood after hearing the dispatch, but by the time he arrived, the area was still under an active shooter lockdown.

He said officers stopped him from approaching the burning home as emergency crews worked to secure the scene.

Firefighters were forced to delay attacking the blaze until police determined it was safe, allowing the fire to consume much of the residence.

The emotional interview marked the first time Ghekiere has spoken publicly since the tragedy.

A Heroic 911 Call

As investigators pieced together the final moments inside the house, family members revealed that Charlotte, 12, made a courageous attempt to save everyone.

According to relatives, Charlotte managed to call 911 during the attack before she was killed.

Family spokesperson Jennifer Mercer described the young girl as a hero whose bravery gave emergency responders crucial information, even though they arrived too late to prevent the massacre.

Community Rallies Around the Surviving Fathers

The killings devastated two fathers.

Alongside Adam Ghekiere, Brad Ireland also lost his former wife, Megan, and their children, Owen and Chloe.

Friends have launched fundraising efforts to help both families with funeral expenses and long-term support. The campaign describes Landon as a protective older brother and Charlotte as a joyful, funny girl whose

personality lit up every room.

Investigation Continues

Authorities continue processing the fire-damaged property, where structural instability has slowed the recovery of evidence.

Police are expected to release additional details after completing forensic examinations of the home and interviewing surviving relatives.

For Adam Ghekiere, however, the investigation cannot answer the question that matters most.

In a single evening, a routine family dinner became an unimaginable tragedy that erased nearly his entire household, leaving behind only memories of the wife and children he was unable to reach before it was too late.
