Born in Staten Island, New York, Michael Ollis grew up with a strong desire to serve. Inspired by family members who had worn the uniform before him, he joined the U.S. Army and dedicated his life to protecting others.

By 2013, he was serving with the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan.

On that day at Forward Operating Base Ghazni, insurgents launched a complex attack involving explosives, gunfire and suicide bombers. Ollis immediately focused on protecting his fellow soldiers, ordering them to move to safer positions before returning to check for anyone left behind.

But the danger was far from over.

The Moment That Defined a Hero
During the battle, Ollis encountered Polish Army officer Karol Cierpica, who had been wounded and was unable to move safely.

As an enemy attacker approached wearing a suicide vest, Ollis made a decision that would cost him his life.

He moved in front of the wounded Polish soldier.

He became the shield.

The explosion killed Ollis, but his actions protected Cierpica and prevented the attacker from reaching more soldiers at the base.

In just a few seconds, Ollis displayed the kind of courage that goes beyond duty — the willingness to sacrifice everything for another person.

A Hero Remembered Across Borders
Michael Ollis was only 24 years old when he died.

But his courage created a bond between two nations.

The Polish soldier he saved, Karol Cierpica, later spoke about Ollis with deep gratitude, saying that he would remember the American soldier who gave his life for him.

Years after his death, Ollis continued to receive recognition for his bravery. His Distinguished Service Cross was later upgraded, and he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States’ highest military honor for acts of valor.
