Kacey Musgraves has never seemed particularly interested in making every creative decision safe enough for everyone to approve.

Her latest tour may be the clearest example yet.

When the country star launched her Middle of Nowhere Tour in Chicago on Aug. 21, fans quickly noticed a stage prop that was almost impossible to ignore: two enormous glitter-covered disco balls designed to resemble a very specific part of the male anatomy.

Musgraves does not merely place them somewhere in the background.

During “Rhinestoned,” she actually rides around on the oversized sparkling creation, turning it into one of the most talked-about visual moments of the show.

Not everyone has been impressed.

After one fan publicly complained about the prop on Instagram, Musgraves delivered a response that made it clear she had no intention of toning things down.

The fan wrote that they could not “get behind” the giant testicle-inspired design.

Musgraves replied:

“Well, maybe you can get in front of them.”

And with that, an unusual piece of tour staging became an even bigger part of the conversation.

Kacey Knows Exactly How Ridiculous the Prop Is

The giant disco balls are not a case of fans discovering some accidental visual similarity that Musgraves never intended.

She is very much in on the joke.

During the tour, Musgraves has openly acknowledged how outrageous the setup is.

At one show, she described the production with another perfectly timed line:

“This is what it looks like when no one tells me no.”

That may be the simplest explanation for the prop.

Musgraves is 38, established enough to know her own audience and successful enough to build the kind of live show she wants.

Instead of presenting a polished country concert built only around tasteful lighting and familiar visuals, she has embraced something more mischievous.

The glittering prop fits the increasingly playful and sexually suggestive tone surrounding her current era.

And rather than acting embarrassed when fans point it out, she keeps turning the criticism into material.

Then Her Grandmother Came to the Show

The joke became even more personal when Musgraves’ grandmother — whom she affectionately calls Nana — attended one of the concerts.

Musgraves has repeatedly talked about her grandmother while discussing some of the more provocative material from this chapter of her career.

With Nana in the audience, the singer joked from the stage that performing every night required a certain amount of courage — before drawing attention to the two gigantic sparkling objects supporting that particular joke.

She then connected the outrageous production to advice she said her grandmother had given her: if she was going to do something, she should make it big and sparkly.

The obvious question was whether Nana had imagined anything quite like this.

That family connection has become a recurring source of comedy for Musgraves because her recent music has pushed into territory that might not naturally seem grandmother-approved.

Her New Material Has Already Tested Nana

The disco-ball controversy is not the first time Musgraves has wondered publicly what her grandmother would think.

Her latest album, released May 1, includes “Dry Spell,” a song containing more sexually suggestive material than fans may have expected from some of her earlier work.

Musgraves has acknowledged that one particular line referencing self-pleasure was not exactly Nana’s favorite.

The song’s music video pushed the concept even further, using deliberately suggestive imagery from its opening moments.

For Musgraves, however, the point seems less about shock for its own sake than about allowing herself to be funny, adult and unfiltered.

She has long combined traditional country influences with modern pop culture, emotional vulnerability and sharp wit.

This time, she appears increasingly comfortable making the joke obvious.

There Was a Much More Serious Nana Moment Behind the Video

Musgraves has also revealed that the humor surrounding her grandmother came frighteningly close to becoming something much more painful.

While filming the “Dry Spell” video, she learned that Nana had suffered a frightening health emergency involving extremely high blood pressure and had been rushed to the hospital.

Musgraves recalled leaving the shoot and becoming emotional while dealing with the news.

Even then, her instinct was to combine fear with humor, worrying about whether her grandmother would recover — and, if she did, how she would react to the provocative video her granddaughter had just been making.

That combination of sincerity and comedy has followed Musgraves throughout the tour.

She can make an outrageous joke one moment and reveal something deeply personal the next.

Even a Stage Fire Became Part of the Show

The giant disco balls are not the only unpredictable element of the Middle of Nowhere Tour so far.

During Musgraves’ Boston concert, part of the stage lighting apparently caught fire.

Instead of immediately freezing or pretending nothing was happening, Musgraves commented on it from the stage.

She noted the obvious danger — particularly given the amount of hairspray involved in a concert performance — and joked about needing a rhinestone-covered fire extinguisher.

Then she moved on with the show.

The incident became another example of the quick humor she has been using throughout the tour whenever something unusual happens.

For audiences, it means the concerts are producing moments that feel less rehearsed than the elaborate staging might suggest.

Even when the production is enormous, Musgraves still sounds like someone making jokes with the crowd in real time.

The Instagram Comment Gave Her the Perfect Setup

That same instinct explains why one critical Instagram comment quickly went viral.

Musgraves shared photos from the tour on Aug. 29.

Among the reactions was a fan who simply could not embrace the giant anatomy-inspired prop.

Rather than ignore the criticism, Musgraves saw an opening.

Her comeback transformed the complaint itself into another joke.

It also made her position very clear.

The prop is staying.

Musgraves is not confused about what it looks like.

She is not embarrassed by it.

And she certainly does not appear interested in redesigning the show because some viewers think it crosses the line from playful into ridiculous.

If anything, the disagreement gives her more material to work with.

The Tour Is Only Getting Started

The Middle of Nowhere Tour began Aug. 21 in Chicago, on Musgraves’ 38th birthday.

Since then, the production has traveled through cities including Boston and New York, where she performed at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 31.

The tour is scheduled to continue for months, ultimately wrapping in London on Feb. 26, 2027.

That leaves plenty of time for fans to debate the prop.

But judging by Musgraves’ response, anyone hoping she will become embarrassed enough to remove it may be disappointed.

A fan said they could not get behind the giant disco balls.
