FLASH floods have wreaked havoc across Spain as torrential rain and fierce gusts of wind batter popular holiday hotspots.

Roads have turned to rivers as storms relentlessly battered the Mediterranean coast, with fresh weather alerts across eight regions.

It comes just hours after a woman died after being swept away in raging floodwater in Majorca.

Up to 30 litres of rain per square meter were dumped on the southern coast of Valencia and north of Alicante in just one hour this morning.

In Murcia, people waded through muddy water up to their knees as floods submerged entire streets.

Elsewhere in Palma, terrifying footage shows residents battling ferocious gusts as they grab hold of parasols before they can be dragged away.

Eight regions were placed on high alert on Wednesday amid treacherous conditions, according to State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

Orange weather warnings were issued across the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Murcia and Valencia.

The alert signals a significant or major risk of severe weather that could cause substantial disruption and potential danger to life.

In the Balearic Islands, orange warnings have been triggered in Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera.

AEMET expects downpours to lash eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands throughout the day.

Strong gusts are set to hit the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands, while heavy fog descends on the north, southeast, and the Mediterranean costal areas.

AEMET’s alert included six different weather phenomena – rain, storms, rissaga, coastal, wind, and extreme heat.

The agency warned that 100mm of rainfall could accumulate within just three or four hours, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 90kmh and possible hail.

The storm sparked around 150 emergency incidents across Majorca on Wednesday with fallen trees and flooding causing chaos.

Authorities scrambled to action, with Majorca Airport, major roads and parks temporarily closed.

A woman died in Felanitx, a rural town in eastern Mallorca, after being swept away by a flash flood.

The 67-year-old is believed to have slipped in a flooded street as torrents of rain tore through the town.

While much of Spain continues to be hit by thunderstorms, temperatures are expected to spike across large swathes of the peninsula.

Temperatures are expected to surge between 8C and 10C above average for this time of year, according to the experts at Meteored.

The Guadalquivir valley in Andalucia and the Guadiana valley in Extremadura will bear the brunt of the extreme heat.

Thermometers are forecast to reach as high as 39C and potentially peak at 40C.

Further north, the Ebro and Tajo valleys, alongside the Lleida depression in Catalunya, will easily surpass 35C.

The sweltering conditions will even stretch to the city of Bilbao and the Miño valley in Spain’s northwestern Galicia region, which are also bracing for highs of 35C.
