The 44-year-old North Carolina mother appears to enter the sea near Grenada’s Grand Anse Beach before swimming beyond the camera’s view.

Hours later, witnesses reportedly saw her far from shore.

Then she disappeared.

More than a week after Liz was last seen on July 22, her husband, Cailen Waddell, said he had joined local authorities in believing that foul play was not responsible for her disappearance. But that conclusion has not brought the family answers—or ended the search.

Instead, attention has shifted toward a crucial gap in the timeline: what Liz did between leaving the Airbnb around noon and being spotted in the water at approximately 5:30 p.m.

For Cailen, those missing hours may contain the detail that explains everything.

Liz had traveled to the Caribbean island with a friend on July 11. Authorities said the two later moved into an Airbnb on the southern part of Grenada on July 21, one day before she vanished.

The rental was near Grand Anse Beach in St. George’s, an area known for its long shoreline and clear water.

At about noon on July 22, surveillance footage recorded Liz leaving the Airbnb. The video later released during the search showed her entering the water and swimming out of sight.

Cailen said the footage appeared to place his wife no more than about 20 feet from land. He estimated that the water in the area was approximately 5 feet deep.

He also described the conditions as very different from the ocean familiar to the family in North Carolina. To him, the water appeared calm, almost more like a lake.

Those details made the disappearance even harder to understand.

Liz was comfortable in the water and had expressed confidence in both her swimming ability and her surroundings. She had also spoken positively about Grenada’s beauty.

Yet witnesses later reported seeing her much farther from shore at around 5:30 that afternoon.

That account created a gap of more than five hours between the last video and the later sighting.

Investigators are now trying to reconstruct her movements during that period. They want to know whether she remained near the beach, returned to land, spoke with anyone or was seen elsewhere before the reported sighting offshore.

Cailen emphasized that even an observation that seemed insignificant could help.

“No detail is too small,” he wrote while appealing to anyone who might have seen his wife.

The search has involved family members, friends, Grenadian residents, local authorities and officials connected to the U.S. Embassy. Cailen said hundreds of hours had been devoted to locating Liz.

Despite that extensive effort, no confirmed trace of her had been found as of July 30.

The family’s search included people traveling to Grenada to assist in person. Local citizens also joined the effort, offering support to relatives navigating an unfamiliar island under devastating circumstances.

Cailen publicly thanked the Royal Grenada Police Force, the Grenadian community and those who traveled to help.

His statements have reflected both grief and determination.

He described himself as heartbroken and acknowledged that he still had many unanswered questions. He also spoke about the life he and Liz had built together—a relationship shaped by their shared love of travel, nature and exploring the world as a team.

A Caribbean vacation had fit naturally into that life.

Now, the same trip had left him trying to understand how his wife could walk from a rental property toward the beach and seemingly vanish within a matter of hours.

He said he supported the view reached by authorities after considering the available evidence. However, that belief did not amount to a complete explanation of what occurred.

The Royal Grenada Police Force continued to handle the case as a missing-person investigation.

Commissioner of Police Randy Connaught said during a July 28 news conference that investigators had not announced a final conclusion about the circumstances of Liz’s disappearance.

That distinction remains important.

While Cailen and authorities may not suspect that another person intentionally harmed Liz, investigators are still trying to determine where she went and what happened after she entered the water.

The last known timeline begins with a clear image and then becomes uncertain.
