Joan Blackman, the actress best known for starring opposite Elvis Presley in the classic films Blue Hawaii and Kid Galahad, has died at the age of 87.

According to her son, Ngai Tarkington, Blackman passed away on March 16 at a hospital in Santa Rosa, California. She had spent many years living in nearby Calistoga.

Born in San Francisco on May 17, 1938, Joan Blackman developed a passion for performing at an early age. She studied singing and dancing, entertaining audiences on television, at military camps, hospitals, and with Ernie Heckscher’s orchestra before pursuing an acting career in Hollywood.

After graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School, she moved to Los Angeles and signed with the production company Hecht-Hill-Lancaster. Her film debut came in the 1959 western Good Day for a Hanging, launching a career that would include numerous film and television appearances.

Blackman became widely recognized after portraying Maile Duval opposite Elvis Presley in Blue Hawaii (1961). The film became one of Presley’s most beloved movies, with Blackman’s character eventually marrying Elvis’ character, Chad Gates, by the story’s conclusion.

She reunited with Presley the following year in Kid Galahad (1962), playing Rose Grogan, the woman who ultimately wins the heart of Walter Gulick, the mechanic-turned-boxer portrayed by the music icon.

Beyond her work with Presley, Blackman appeared alongside Dean Martin in Career (1959), starred in Visit to a Small Planet with Jerry Lewis, and built an extensive résumé that included films such as The Great Impostor, Twilight of Honor, Macon County Line, and Moonrunners.

Television audiences also came to know her through guest appearances on popular series including Perry Mason, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, I Spy, and Run for Your Life. She also had a recurring role as Marion Fowler during the second season of the primetime drama Peyton Place.

Earlier in her career, Blackman was considered for the role of Maria in West Side Story. Although the part ultimately went to Natalie Wood, she continued to build a successful career across both film and television throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

Away from Hollywood, Blackman enjoyed a quieter life centered on gardening and singing in her local community. She was married to actor Joby Baker from 1959 to 1961 and later to actor Rockne Tarkington from 1968 to 1970.

She was preceded in death by her son, Rockne Tarkington Jr., who died in 2019, and is survived by her son, Ngai Tarkington.

Remembered for her elegance, warmth, and memorable performances alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Joan Blackman leaves behind a legacy that continues to resonate with fans of classic film and television.
