JACKSON COUNTY, Mississippi — More than a month after 18-year-old Nolan Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July boating trip to Horn Island, investigators continue piecing together the events leading to his death as new evidence, witness accounts, and forensic examinations add complexity to one of Mississippi’s most closely watched investigations.

Wells, a recent high school graduate and college football player from Ocean Springs, traveled to Horn Island on July 4 with a group of friends for a holiday gathering attended by hundreds of people. According to investigators, he was last seen during the afternoon before he failed to return to the mainland with the rest of the group. His body was discovered near the island’s northwestern shoreline on July 6 after an extensive search involving local authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard, and volunteer organizations.

Timeline Under the Microscope

Authorities have reconstructed much of the day’s activity using witness interviews, GPS records, and marine tracking data. Investigators confirmed that the boat carrying Wells departed for Horn Island in the morning and later returned without him.

Meanwhile, several of Wells’ friends have launched a legal defense fund, saying they have received threats and false accusations online despite not being charged with any crime.
