A University of North Florida student apparently tried several times to get away from a stranger who was following him across campus.

First, he went inside his dormitory.

Then he tried to find a friend.

When that failed, he entered a lobby bathroom and locked himself inside a stall.

According to police, the stranger followed him there too.

What allegedly happened during the next 14 minutes has now led to multiple criminal charges against 22-year-old Jack Tyler Laroche, a Georgia man who investigators say later told officers he had come to the Jacksonville campus to create YouTube content.

Police allege Laroche entered the locked stall with the student, who has autism, filmed him without permission, put him in a headlock and repeatedly flicked him in the face hard enough to knock off and break his glasses.

Before leaving, Laroche allegedly made the student set a 10-minute timer on his phone.

Police say he warned him not to leave until the timer expired or he would “come back and get you.”

The student remained inside.

He was afraid the man might return.

The Student Said He Realized Someone Was Following Him

The confrontation happened at the University of North Florida on Aug. 21.

According to the arrest report obtained by PEOPLE, the student first noticed an unknown man following him outside the dormitory where he lived.

He attempted to get away by going inside.

The man allegedly continued following him.

The student then went to a friend’s room, apparently hoping to find a safe place or another person nearby. But his friend was not there.

So he went into a bathroom in the building’s lobby.

He entered a stall and locked the door.

That still did not stop the man, police allege.

According to the report, Laroche entered the stall next to him, looked over the divider and began talking to the student.

He then allegedly entered the student’s locked stall.

What might have begun as unsettling behavior had now become a situation the student reportedly felt he could not escape.

Police Say Laroche Demanded His Phone Number

Inside the stall, Laroche allegedly demanded the student’s phone number.

He then called the number to confirm that the student had given him the correct one, according to the police account.

Investigators say Laroche also began recording him with a cellphone.

The encounter then allegedly became physical.

Laroche is accused of putting the student in a headlock and repeatedly flicking him in the face.

The student’s glasses fell to the floor and broke.

When police later documented his condition, investigators reported minor abrasions around his nose and swelling on his cheeks.

But the incident apparently did not end when Laroche left the stall.

Police say he imposed one final condition.

The 10-Minute Timer

Before leaving the bathroom, Laroche allegedly ordered the student to set a timer on his phone for 10 minutes.

According to the arrest report, he warned the student not to leave the stall before the timer went off.

If he did, Laroche allegedly threatened to return.

The student believed him.

Police said surveillance footage showed the suspect following the student into the restroom at approximately 3:45 p.m. and leaving about 14 minutes later.

The student remained inside until the timer expired because he was afraid.

Only afterward did he leave the building and drive to the campus police station to report what had happened.

That decision would give investigators something especially useful.

Laroche had allegedly called the student’s phone while confirming his number.

Police therefore had a number connected to the stranger they were looking for.

The Man Who Answered Allegedly Claimed to Be 65-Year-Old “Jack Jones”

An officer called the number.

According to the police report, the person who answered identified himself as “Jack Jones.”

He allegedly claimed he was 65 years old and said he was in Georgia.

But police soon found a man matching the suspect’s description still walking around the UNF campus.

He was reportedly soaked with water and had a small injury to his leg.

When officers confronted him, police say he again identified himself as Jack Jones and claimed he was a student at the university.

There was a problem.

He allegedly could not tell officers which dormitory he lived in.

Investigators eventually determined that he was Jack Tyler Laroche, 22, of Kingsland, Georgia, using identification found in his wallet.

The student was then shown the man.

According to police, he positively identified Laroche as the person who had assaulted him.

Surveillance Footage Challenged His Initial Story

Laroche allegedly told police he had been running through a campus fountain and had fallen, explaining why he was wet and had injured his leg.

He initially denied entering any campus building, according to the arrest report.

Investigators then told him something important:

They had surveillance footage.

Police say Laroche subsequently acknowledged that he had entered a bathroom but denied interacting with the student.

Authorities, however, say the surveillance video supported the student’s timeline by showing Laroche following him into the restroom and emerging roughly 14 minutes later.

Investigators also had the phone contact, the student’s injuries and his identification of Laroche.

Police Say He Told Them He Wanted YouTube Content

Perhaps the most disturbing element of the case is the alleged explanation.

According to police, Laroche told officers he had gone to the University of North Florida campus to create content for YouTube.

When discussing his actions, the report says he told investigators he was essentially just “f—— around.”

That remark has helped transform what might otherwise have remained a local campus arrest into a broader story about the lengths some people may go for online attention.

Authorities have not said that YouTube itself had any involvement in the incident, nor does merely creating online content establish criminal intent.

The allegations concern Laroche’s specific conduct.

Police accuse him not simply of filming a stranger, but of following a vulnerable student who was trying to get away, entering a locked restroom stall, physically restraining him and making him afraid to leave even after the encounter was over.

Laroche Faces Multiple Charges

Laroche was arrested and charged with abuse of a disabled adult without causing great bodily harm, false imprisonment and giving a false name or identification to law enforcement.

Local reporting says he has since bonded out of the Duval County jail and is expected to return to court.

The charges remain allegations.

Laroche has not been convicted, and the factual allegations contained in the police report will still have to be tested through the court process.

The student has not been publicly identified.

The Most Troubling Part May Be How Many Times He Tried to Get Away

The bathroom stall is the part of the story that immediately captures attention.

But the full timeline may be even more unsettling.

According to police, the student did not voluntarily participate in some spontaneous prank.

He noticed someone following him.

He went inside his residence hall.

The person allegedly kept following him.

He tried to reach a friend.

Then he retreated into a bathroom.

Then into a locked stall.

Police say the man followed him through every one of those steps.

And even after the alleged attacker finally left, the student still did not feel free to walk out.

He waited for the timer.

That may be the detail that best explains the seriousness of the false-imprisonment allegation.

For 10 additional minutes, the person accused of frightening him was no longer physically present.

But according to police, the fear remained powerful enough to keep the student exactly where he had been ordered to stay.

Only when the countdown reached zero did he finally leave — and go straight to police.
