Teenager Hailed as Hero After Running Into Burning House to Rescue Young Girl
SWANSEA, NEW SOUTH WALES — A 16-year-old Australian teenager is being praised for extraordinary bravery after rushing into a burning home and helping rescue a young girl trapped inside.
Mace Jefferson was returning from TAFE with a friend when he noticed a house on Northcote Avenue in Swansea engulfed in flames Thursday afternoon. Without waiting for firefighters to arrive, the teenager moved toward the burning property to help.
Teen Runs Toward the Flames
An 87-year-old woman and two 5-year-old girls were inside the home when the fire broke out at around 1:30 p.m.
Jefferson and a 37-year-old man reportedly forced their way into the burning property in an attempt to reach those trapped inside.
Jefferson kicked through a window and managed to rescue one of the young girls.
His actions came at enormous personal cost. During the rescue, he suffered a serious injury to his Achilles tendon and is expected to require surgery followed by a lengthy recovery.

Tragedy Despite the Rescue Effort
While one child was successfully rescued, the second 5-year-old girl could not be saved.
Emergency crews later located the child inside the home, but she was pronounced dead.
The elderly woman also suffered serious burns and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The devastating outcome has left the community mourning, even as residents praise the courage of the teenager who risked his own life trying to save those inside.

Community Rallies Behind the Teen
Friends and community members have described Jefferson’s actions as selfless and courageous.
A fundraising effort has been launched to support him during his recovery. Because of his injuries, the teenager is expected to be unable to continue working as a carpentry apprentice while he undergoes treatment and rehabilitation.
NSW police have also praised the young rescuer, describing his actions as a powerful example of community spirit and a willingness to help others in an emergency.

Fire Investigation Underway
Firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control, but the property was badly damaged.
A neighboring home was also affected by the fire, and investigators have begun examining the scene to determine what caused the blaze.
For Jefferson, what began as an ordinary afternoon quickly became a life-changing experience.
He saw a family in danger and chose to run toward the flames rather than away from them.
His rescue could not prevent the heartbreaking loss of one child, but his actions helped save another life — and have earned him widespread praise as a true young hero.
