At 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon, Patrick McLain walked his daughter down the aisle beside the Ohio River.

Before placing her hand into the groom’s, he squeezed it three times.

For Hannah Sheets, that familiar gesture had always meant the same thing: “I love you.”

Less than seven hours later, while Hannah and her new husband were still at their wedding venue, she learned that her father had died unexpectedly.

Hannah described him as a hero and a man of faith who was consistently willing to place himself in danger to protect other people.

To the public, his career could be measured through uniforms, deployments and emergency work.

To Hannah, he was also the father who helped shape the woman she became.

She said his influence would remain present in every stage of her life, including the marriage he had been able to witness only hours before his death.

He Had Already Welcomed Dylan Into the Family

Patrick’s death also deeply affected Dylan.
