Conjoined Twins Heloísa and Helena Die After Brave Final Separation Surgery in Brazil

A heartbreaking tragedy has left a family and medical team mourning after two-year-old conjoined twins Heloísa and Helena Batista da Silva died following a final attempt to separate them in Brazil.

The sisters, who were joined at the head and shared brain tissue and blood vessels, underwent a complex 15-hour surgery at Hospital das Clínicas in Ribeirão Preto — the fifth and final procedure in a long medical journey.

After the successful separation, doctors fought to stabilize the twins when their conditions suddenly worsened. The girls experienced severe complications, including cardiac arrest, and despite the team’s efforts, they could not be saved.

Plastic surgeon Jayme Farina Júnior, who was part of the medical team, said the twins had already faced many health challenges throughout their lives, including respiratory complications and previous procedures that placed significant stress on their fragile bodies.

The separation process had required multiple surgeries over the past year, with more than 50 medical professionals involved. Earlier operations focused on carefully separating shared brain tissue and blood vessels while preparing the twins for the final procedure.

Although the outcome was devastating, the family expressed gratitude to the doctors and hospital staff who fought to give the sisters a chance at life.

Heloísa and Helena were laid to rest on August 16 in São José dos Campos, near their family’s home. Their story remains a powerful reminder of the courage of children, families, and medical teams facing extraordinary challenges.
