Justice for HeeHaw: Beloved Baby Donkey’s Family Demands Answers After Police Shooting

Justice for HeeHaw: Beloved Baby Donkey’s Family Demands Answers After Police Shooting
ROCKMART, GEORGIA — HeeHaw was only one year old.
He had been bottle-raised by Hannah Israel, welcomed into her home and loved like a member of the family. He was friendly around people, participated in petting zoos and, according to Israel, had never been known to hurt anyone.
Then, shortly after midnight, everything changed.
Police officers entered the family’s pasture while pursuing a suspect and encountered HeeHaw.
Minutes later, the young donkey was gone.

“He Was My Son”
Israel has described the loss in the simplest and most heartbreaking way: “He was my son.”
For her, HeeHaw wasn’t livestock that happened to live on the property.
He was an animal she had raised by hand.
He knew her voice. He knew his home. He was comfortable around people and had grown up trusting the humans around him.
That makes the circumstances surrounding his loss even harder for the family to accept.

What the Family Says Happened
According to Israel, officers told her that HeeHaw ran toward them while braying and that they believed they were in danger.
She said police attempted to use a Taser before shooting him.
Israel strongly questions why the encounter had to end that way, particularly because she says HeeHaw was a domesticated, friendly animal who was accustomed to interacting with strangers.
From her perspective, he was behaving like a donkey startled by unfamiliar people entering his pasture in the middle of the night.
And for that, her family believes he paid a heartbreaking price.

A Life That Should Have Been Much Longer
Perhaps the hardest part for Israel is knowing how much life HeeHaw had ahead of him.
He had only recently celebrated his first birthday.
She had imagined watching him grow older and even hoped her future children would one day grow up alongside him.
Instead, those plans disappeared in a single night.
The family is now left with photographs, memories and videos of the young donkey they loved.
But none of them can replace HeeHaw.

The Officer Has Been Placed on Leave
The Cedartown Police Department confirmed that the officer involved has been placed on leave.
Authorities have not publicly provided a complete account of the encounter, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
Israel, meanwhile, has vowed to pursue legal action and is demanding answers about why the situation ended with HeeHaw being shot.
A fundraising campaign created to help with her legal expenses has also received an outpouring of support.

Justice Doesn’t Mean Hate
Israel’s grief is powerful, but her message is ultimately about accountability.
She wants the circumstances examined.
She wants transparency.
And she wants people to understand that HeeHaw was not simply an animal caught in an unfortunate incident.
He was a beloved companion who had been raised and cared for from a very young age.
He had a name.
He had a home.
He had someone waiting for him.

Remember HeeHaw
There is no way to undo what happened that night.
But there is still a chance to make sure HeeHaw’s story is not forgotten.
His family deserves answers about what happened in that pasture.
And HeeHaw deserves to be remembered for the life he lived — not simply the way his life was cut short.
He was loved.
He was trusted.
He was family.
💔 Justice for HeeHaw.
